CARE HOME MANAGER JAILED FOR ASSAULT ON DISABLED RESIDENT
A man identified as Patrick McLoughlin, aged 56, was sentenced to four months in jail for assaulting a resident at the Aras Attracta residential centre. The incident involved McLoughlin sitting on the lap of a disabled woman, known as Miss A, who is non-verbal and autistic.
The judge described his actions as an "offensive, downgrading invasion of her bodily integrity" and emphasized the vulnerability of the victim, a long-term resident with significant intellectual disabilities.
Evidence was obtained through a secret recording by RTE's Investigations Unit, which captured McLoughlin chasing Miss A to her special chair and half-sitting on her, an act the judge noted could have caused physical harm.
McLoughlin, who is a senior staff member and qualified professional, claimed his actions were "a bit of fun" and "playful interaction," but the judge highlighted the cruelty and inhumanity of the act, especially given the victim’s vulnerabilities.
As part of the sentence, he was also ordered to pay €1,000 to his victim's personal fund.
The court's ruling reflects the serious view of abuse in care environments and underscores the need to protect vulnerable individuals from such acts of assault.
