PATRICK CASH AND HIS ESCAPE FROM ESSEX'S CLARE HOUSE MENTAL UNIT
A convicted child sex offender, Patrick Cash, has once again caused concern after he escaped from a mental health facility located in Essex. The incident occurred shortly after Cash had been on a routine shopping trip, but instead of returning to the secure environment of Clare House in Burnt Mills Road, Bowers Gifford, he managed to evade authorities.
The situation is particularly alarming as this marks Cash’s fourth known instance of absconding from the same facility.
At Basildon Crown Court, Judge Philip Clegg publicly addressed the matter, revealing that Cash’s repeated disappearances have raised serious questions about security and public safety.
Patrick Cash, aged 35, has a troubling past, including a conviction from 1995 for the repeated rape of a schoolboy.
Despite his criminal history and current designation as a sex offender, he was granted permission to leave Clare House for a shopping trip.
However, instead of returning, Cash opted to travel by train to London, where he spent time drinking with friends.
Initially, police officials failed to inform the public of Cash’s disappearance.
It was only after five days that authorities issued a public appeal seeking information about his whereabouts.
This delay in alerts left the community vulnerable during the critical period of his absence.
Eventually, Cash made the decision to turn himself in to the police authorities.
During the court proceedings, Judge Clegg emphasized the necessity of taking further protective measures for both Cash and the wider community.
He stated, “I am not in the business of punishing the mentally-ill, but I am in the business of ensuring the public are protected.” As a result of these events, Cash has now been prohibited from leaving Clare House on any outings for the foreseeable future.
He was returned to the care of staff at the facility following his reintegration into custody.
This series of incidents underscores ongoing concerns about the management of mentally ill sex offenders in secure facilities and the challenges in safeguarding public safety amidst repeated breaches.
