PABLO SOUTO FROM EDINBURGH INVOLVED IN CHILD PORNOGRAPHY SCANDAL AT SCOTS UNIVERSITY
In July 2021, a disturbing case emerged involving Pablo Souto, a resident of Edinburgh, who was found to possess a large collection of illegal and highly disturbing images depicting child abuse. The case drew significant attention due to the nature of the crimes and the circumstances surrounding Souto's employment at a prominent Scottish university.
It was revealed that Souto, aged 37 at the time, had downloaded more than 5,000 indecent images of children ranging in age from as young as six months to 16 years old.
These images included explicit scenes of children being raped by adults, as well as children being subjected to abuse while performing solo sexual acts.
The severity and graphic nature of the content underscored the gravity of his offenses.
Despite the serious allegations, Souto continued his work at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh until he was required to appear in court.
The university, upon learning of the allegations, initially suspended him but later allowed him to return to work under modified duties following a comprehensive risk assessment.
The university's spokesperson clarified that Souto was permitted to resume his responsibilities, which could include mediating conflicts between students in university accommodation, assisting students with settling in, or serving as a point of contact for students locked out of their rooms.
However, this arrangement was temporary, and he was suspended again pending sentencing scheduled for the following month.
Details of the investigation revealed that police had received intelligence indicating Souto's involvement in downloading indecent images at his former residence in Sinclair Place, Edinburgh.
In June 2020, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at his property.
During the search, they seized a laptop belonging to Souto, which was subsequently subjected to forensic examination.
The analysis uncovered a staggering 5,388 indecent images stored on the device's hard drive.
Prosecutor Rosie Cook provided further details, stating that among the images, 946 were classified as Category A, indicating the most graphic and severe content.
Additionally, there were 1,202 images categorized as B and 3,240 as C, with the material depicting children of various ages, from infants to teenagers.
The youngest victims included six-month-old babies, highlighting the disturbing nature of the material involved.
At Edinburgh Sheriff Court, Sheriff Daniel Kelly deferred sentencing to allow for the preparation of social work reports.
Souto was placed on the Sex Offenders' Register for an unspecified period and was granted bail.
His sentencing was scheduled for August, and he remains under legal supervision while the case continues to unfold.
