OWEN SAUNDERS CAUGHT WITH CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN LEICESTER AND SAFFRON LANE
In a case that has shocked the local community, Owen Saunders, a 36-year-old man from Leicester, was found to possess a significant collection of illegal images depicting young girls engaged in sexual activities.The incident came to light after police investigations uncovered his involvement with numerous indecent images, leading to his appearance in Leicester Crown Court.
According to court reports, authorities seized computers from two different addresses linked to Saunders.
One of these was a residence on Cavendish Road, situated within the Saffron Lane estate in Leicester, where the initial examination took place in January 2010.
The second computer was recovered from Devonshire Road, off St Margaret’s Way, where Saunders was residing at the time.
Prosecutor Victoria Rose detailed the findings, revealing that the police discovered Saunders had accessed a total of 781 images classified as level one, which is considered the least severe category on a scale ranging from one to five.
In addition to these, investigators found five images at level three and a single video clip at level four, indicating a progression in the severity of the content.
The majority of these images depicted girls aged between 11 and 14 years old, highlighting the disturbing nature of the material.
During the investigation, Saunders cooperated with authorities by providing his computer passwords, allowing for a thorough examination of his devices.
Further, he admitted to possessing 58 prohibited 'pseudo' images, which simulate illegal sexual acts but do not involve actual children, adding another layer to his charges.
Saunders, who resides on Curzon Avenue in Birstall, was sentenced to four months in jail, but this sentence was suspended for two years.
As part of his sentence, he will be under supervision and required to attend a specialized sex offender treatment program.
Additionally, he has been ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of seven years and has been subject to a sexual offences prevention order, which grants authorities the authority to monitor his future use of computers and online activity.
During the sentencing hearing, defense lawyer Carl Gaskell argued that the delay in bringing the case to court, which spanned two years, was not Saunders' fault.
Gaskell emphasized that Saunders had been living with the burden of this situation for that period and expressed his client’s willingness to address his offending behavior.
He also pointed out that there were no aggravating features in the case.
Judge David Pugsley addressed the court, acknowledging the shame and punishment associated with appearing before a judge.
He expressed his inability to comprehend how someone could become involved in such activities, noting that Saunders had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity, which demonstrated some level of remorse.
The judge also highlighted the positive references Saunders received from friends, but emphasized that the nature of the images was deeply warped and unacceptable.
While recognizing that the offences warranted custody, Judge Pugsley stressed the importance of intervention and treatment, which he believed was essential for rehabilitation.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against online child exploitation and the importance of vigilant law enforcement in protecting vulnerable victims.
