ONEDIKA ORIAKU AND SHOCKING RAPE IN SWANSEA NIGHTCLUB
A man identified as Onyedika Oriaku was publicly condemned and labeled as 'sinister' after he was found to have committed a sexual assault within the premises of a nightclub in Swansea. The incident, which took place earlier this year, involved Oriaku bringing a friend into the nightclub’s toilets immediately following the assault, raising serious questions about his conduct and intentions.
The case was heard at Swansea Crown Court, where prosecutor Ian Wright provided detailed testimony about the events that unfolded at the Fiction nightclub located in Swansea city centre.
According to the prosecution, the assault occurred in March during a night when Oriaku, a student, was present in the club along with a group of other males, all of whom were wearing sunglasses.
The group was situated in the club’s VIP area, a section often associated with a more exclusive and private experience.
During the course of the evening, Oriaku and a woman engaged in kissing, which was noted during the trial.
The woman involved was described as being heavily intoxicated at the time.
After some time, she left the VIP area to use the toilet facilities.
It was during this visit that Oriaku followed her into the restroom.
The court heard that in one of the toilet cubicles, Oriaku committed the act of rape against the woman.
The assault was described as a serious violation, and the court was presented with evidence that after the incident, Oriaku returned to his friends in the VIP section.
Subsequently, Oriaku and one of his companions went to the female toilets again.
However, their presence was interrupted when two women in the vicinity explicitly told them to leave, indicating their disapproval of the men’s actions.
During the trial, Oriaku claimed that his return to the toilets was motivated by concern for the woman’s well-being, asserting that she was exhausted from their sexual encounter and that he was checking on her.
This explanation was met with skepticism by the court.
The assault was eventually reported to the police, leading to an investigation.
The victim’s statement, which was read aloud during the proceedings, highlighted the profound and lasting impact the attack had on her mental health.
She expressed feelings of distrust towards men and described how her life had been significantly affected by the trauma.
Oriaku, residing at Victoria Terrace in Brynmill, Swansea, was previously convicted by a jury of one count of rape.
At the time of sentencing, it was noted that he had no prior criminal convictions.
His defense lawyer, James Hartson, described Oriaku as a man of previously good character, emphasizing his status as a student in Swansea and his employment in the care sector.
However, Judge Geraint Walters delivered a stern judgment after reviewing CCTV footage from the nightclub and observing Oriaku’s demeanor during his testimony.
The judge remarked that Oriaku appeared to have an inflated sense of self-importance, which he deemed unwarranted.
He pointed out that although alcohol may have disinhibited the woman, this did not give Oriaku the right to decide the outcome of their encounter.
The judge also criticized Oriaku for returning to the VIP area and allegedly 'gloating' about his actions.
Furthermore, the judge dismissed Oriaku’s explanation for returning to the toilets with another male as 'fanciful beyond belief,' describing the return as 'sinister.' The judge condemned Oriaku’s conduct in the toilets as 'truly shameful' and noted that he had shown no remorse for his actions.
As a result of the conviction, Oriaku was sentenced to a prison term of seven years.
He is required to serve at least two-thirds of this sentence before being eligible for release on license, after which he will serve the remainder of his sentence within the community under supervision.
Additionally, Oriaku will be registered as a sex offender for the rest of his life, reflecting the severity of his crime and the lasting impact on the victim.
