OMAR SHARIF SENTENCED TO OVER 37 YEARS IN SUNDERLAND FOR SEXUAL ABUSE AND DRUG OFFENCES
In a significant case that has shocked the Sunderland community, Omar Sharif has been handed a lengthy prison sentence exceeding 37 years after being found guilty of multiple serious offences involving the exploitation of vulnerable teenagers.The sentencing took place at Newcastle Crown Court on a recent Wednesday, following a comprehensive trial that uncovered disturbing details about Sharif’s actions.
Sharif, aged 24 and residing on Brunton Terrace in Sunderland, was convicted on four counts of rape involving three different victims, along with a charge of sexual assault.
The victims, all young women aged between 17 and 19, were subjected to his predatory behavior during a period spanning from October 2015 to July 2016.
The court heard how Sharif, who was a student at the time, used his social gatherings as a platform to prey on these vulnerable young women, often using the guise of parties where he also engaged in drug dealing.
While Sharif admitted to several drug-related charges, he vehemently denied the allegations of sexual abuse.
The trial, which commenced in November at Newcastle Crown Court, was part of an extensive investigation known as Operation Argon.
This operation, led by Northumbria Police’s specialized Safeguarding team, aims to protect society’s most vulnerable members from exploitation and abuse.
The jury found Sharif guilty of four counts of rape against three victims and one count of sexual assault.
In addition, he was convicted of three counts of supplying Class A drugs and one count of attempting to conceal £2,000.
During the proceedings, Sharif also pleaded guilty to multiple other charges, including two counts of being involved in the supply of Class A and B drugs, two counts of possession of Class A drugs, and one count of supplying Class A drugs.
Furthermore, he admitted to perverting the course of justice on three occasions and committing perjury.
The court sentenced Sharif to a total of 37 years and six months in prison for his array of crimes.
Notably, he was acquitted of two counts of rape involving a 17-year-old victim, highlighting the complexity of the case.
The investigation also led to convictions for three other individuals connected to the operation.
Milagros Simona Sanchez, aged 25 from Chester Road in Sunderland, admitted to allowing her property to be used for drug supply and received a 12-month community order.
Amer Sharif, Omar’s 20-year-old brother, also from Sunderland’s Brunton Terrace, was convicted of attempting to pervert the course of justice.
He was accused of helping to coerce a woman into making false statements about one of the victims.
His sentence was 12 months, suspended for 18 months.
Additionally, James Sykes, aged 22 from Harraton, Washington, was sentenced to 12 months suspended for a year for his involvement in the supply of MDMA.
