Whitehills Rapist
Oliver Smith, aged 21, has been handed a significant prison sentence of 12 years following a series of serious criminal charges related to kidnapping and sexual assault in the town of Bordon. The sentencing took place on Friday, 24 January, after Smith pleaded guilty to multiple offences during a court appearance at Portsmouth Crown Court.

Smith, who resides in South Hurst, Whitehills, and identifies as transgender with they/them pronouns, appeared before the court on Monday, 4 November. During this hearing, they admitted to a range of grave charges, including rape, attempted rape, false imprisonment, and committing an offence with the intent to commit a sexual offence. Additionally, Smith pleaded guilty to threatening another individual with a blade, causing a person to engage in sexual activity without their consent, and breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Today’s court session saw Smith return for sentencing, where the judge imposed a 12-year prison term. Furthermore, the court extended Smith’s license period by an additional six years and six months, ensuring a prolonged period of supervision following their release. This conviction and sentence are the culmination of a comprehensive investigation carried out by multiple teams within the police force, including the specialized Operation Amberstone unit, which is tasked with investigating sexual offences such as rape and assault.

The investigation was initiated after authorities received a report on Friday, 27 September, detailing an incident involving a teenage girl who was reportedly raped by an unknown man in the Deadwater Valley area. The victim was approached in a wooded area while on her way to school, where she was threatened with a bladed box cutter. Immediate efforts were made to search the vicinity, and following a series of inquiries, Smith was identified and arrested on Saturday, 28 September. It was discovered that Smith had fled the area by train to Mallaig, a remote location at the end of the train line in Scotland. Smith was subsequently returned to Hampshire by officers from Police Scotland.

During the sentencing, the judge described Smith’s actions as “planned and premeditated,” emphasizing that their conduct was “calculated and predatory.” The judge also remarked that Smith appeared to have deliberately planned their actions for that day. In delivering the sentence, the judge paid tribute to the victim’s extraordinary bravery, acknowledging the profound trauma inflicted and highlighting that the victim was particularly vulnerable. The court noted that the victim should have been able to walk to school safely, underscoring the severity of the breach of trust and safety.

PSI Doug Gould, the investigating officer from Operation Amberstone, stated, “Today’s sentence sends a clear message that Oliver Smith’s shocking predatory behaviour will not be tolerated. Smith’s actions have had a serious impact not only on the victim, who has shown tremendous courage throughout the proceedings, but also on the community in Bordon.”

Gould further expressed hope that the sentence would bring some measure of closure for the victim and encourage others to come forward if they have experienced similar assaults. Detective Inspector Claire Shawley also commented, “We will not tolerate violence against women and girls in our community. I am especially pleased that we were able to apprehend Smith swiftly, as they pose a very serious threat to the public and deserve to be behind bars.”
