A victim of domestic violence received commendation from detectives for her bravery, which led to her attacker being jailed.

At around 12:50am on 27 January 2024, she called the police reporting that Olegs Arklins was intoxicated at her address and threatening her.

While speaking to a call handler from the Contact Management Department (CMD), Arklins stabbed her.

Law enforcement officers quickly arrived at the scene on Norfolk Street, Westcotes, and found Arklins, 45, sitting on the pavement outside.

He was immediately placed under arrest, and other officers entered the premises to assist the injured woman until the East Midlands Ambulance Service arrived.

The woman, now aged 40, was taken to hospital and underwent life-saving surgery.

She has since recovered fully.

During an interview, Arklins, who was without a fixed address, stated he had not intended to kill her, but was charged with attempted murder.

Following his trial at Leicester Crown Court, he was sentenced on 3 October to serve 27 years in prison.
