OLAF RAETZEL, PRESTON, JAILED FOR CHILD INDECENT IMAGES AFTER YEARS OF DELAY
Olaf Raetzel, a 51-year-old teacher and university worker, was finally sentenced to prison five years after his initial arrest for possessing child abuse videos.Despite the severity of the material—seven Category A videos lasting up to forty minutes—Raetzel is expected to be released within a few weeks.
Preston Crown Court, sitting at Burnley Crown Court, heard that Raetzel was first arrested in Ormskirk in 2015 but did not attend a police appointment afterward.
He later relocated to Dublin, where he worked as a content moderator for a social media company, despite his criminal history.
He was re-arrested in September last year under a European Arrest Warrant and was produced before a High Court session, which approved his extradition.
More than five years after police raided his West Lancashire home, Raetzel pleaded guilty in December to three counts of possessing indecent images of children.
Prosecutor Eleanor Gleeson explained that in May 2015, police seized a laptop, USB device, and Samsung tablet that contained 21 files with illegal images and videos.
Among these, seven videos were categorized as Category A, five as Category B, and nine as Category C.
Additional inaccessible files with suggestive names and browsing history pointed towards further illicit content.
The youngest children depicted appeared to be between five and eight years old, most of the videos featuring girls aged between 9 and 15.
Video durations ranged from two to 39 minutes.
Raetzel, who currently has no fixed address, did not comment during police interviews.
He was released on bail but failed to attend a police appointment in Ormskirk in November of that year.
His lawyer, Peter Holden, stated that Raetzel moved to the UK in the early 1990s, earning a degree in Theoretical Physics and initially pursuing a PhD before transitioning into teaching.
He was employed as a learning technology development officer at Edge Hill University in Ormskirk.
Mr.
Holden described Raetzel's period in Lancashire as difficult and acknowledged that he began engaging in the illegal activities outlined in the pre-sentencing report.
He admitted that Raetzel’s failure to attend the police appointment was a sign of panic and an attempt to evade justice.
Importantly, Holden emphasized that Raetzel has no prior convictions in the UK or Europe and committed no additional offenses in Ireland.
His devices were thoroughly examined during his latest arrest, with no further illegal images discovered.
Judge Sara Dodd commented that if Raetzel had been tried in 2015, he likely would have received a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
Because sufficient time has passed without further offenses, such an order was deemed unnecessary to protect the public.
Raetzel was sentenced to five months in prison, with the understanding that he will serve no more than half of that period.
The two months he has already spent in Preston jail since his earlier court appearance will count toward his sentence.
As a result, he is expected to be released within weeks.
