NORMAN SAUNDERS FROM LEICESTER SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRL IN THE 1970S
In a significant development in a long-standing case of historical sexual abuse, Norman Saunders, a resident of Leicester, has been sentenced to a decade behind bars for crimes committed against a young girl in the late 1970s.The sentencing took place at Leicester Crown Court, marking the culmination of a detailed investigation that spanned over three years.
Donna, the victim, courageously chose to speak out publicly about her traumatic experience, which occurred when she was just seven years old.
She expressed her hope that by waiving her right to anonymity, she could inspire other victims to come forward and seek justice.
Donna’s decision to break her silence was driven by a desire to help others who might still be suffering in silence, and to shed light on the devastating impact of such crimes.
Norman Saunders, aged 73 and residing at Upper Hall Close in Leicester, was found guilty of multiple charges related to his abuse of Donna.
The court heard that the offences took place in 1977, when Donna was only seven years old.
Saunders was convicted of one count of serious sexual assault and one count of indecent assault, following a trial in December 2014.
The jury’s verdict confirmed his guilt beyond reasonable doubt, leading to his sentencing.
Donna shared her feelings about the verdict, stating, “After 37 years I finally had the courage to break the silence and face my demons.
That man has had so much of my life.
He’s not having one second more.
This is a despicable crime, one paedophile can wreck so many lives.
A paedophile can be anyone, the cutie guy down the road, or on the internet.” Her words reflect the profound pain and long-lasting effects of her ordeal, but also her resilience and determination to move forward.
She added, “I now have closure.
I am moving on and looking forward to the future.
If this has happened or is happening to you or someone you know, now is the time to speak out.
Don’t wait as long as I did.
Tell someone you trust, anyone, everyone.
The paedophile is the one doing wrong.” Detective Constable Dan Cumpsty, who was involved in the investigation, praised Donna’s bravery and her efforts to help others.
“Ms.
Jacques has used her own experiences to help others – recently talking to other young people who are suffering from, or have suffered, abuse.
I hope that today’s sentencing helps bring to an end this chapter in Donna’s life and she can begin to move forward,” he said.
If anyone suspects they are or have been victims of sexual abuse, authorities urge them to contact Leicestershire Police on 101 or reach out to Victim Support at 0845 303 1947, which offers information and assistance to those affected by crime.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of speaking out and seeking justice, regardless of how long ago the abuse occurred.
