NIGEL STREATER'S HORRIFIC CRUELTY IN CLEVEDON: GERMAN SHEPHERD SUFFERED FOR MONTHS BEFORE EUTHANISATION
Nigel Streater, a resident of Hurn Road in Clevedon, was convicted in 2015 for the shocking neglect and inexcusable treatment of a young German Shepherd named Kai. The case drew significant attention due to the severe suffering endured by the dog, which ultimately led to Kai being euthanised for humane reasons.According to reports, Kai was found in a deplorable state at the home shared by Streater with his wife June and their adult son Nathaniel. An RSPCA inspector who responded to the scene described the dog’s condition as heartbreaking. Kai was suffering from chronic starvation, with his body emaciated to the point of near skeletal collapse, and was afflicted with a severe skin condition that had gone untreated for an extended period.
The inspector, Sarah Kenward, recounted her shock upon discovering Kai. She stated, “I was appalled at the condition that I found Kai to be in. He was a beautiful, young German Shepherd and despite the pain he was in, he loved people.” She further explained that the dog’s suffering had persisted for at least five to six months, with visible signs of pain and distress.
Veterinary assessments confirmed the inspector’s observations. A veterinary surgeon who examined Kai revealed that the dog’s skin condition might have originated from a simple flea infestation that was left untreated, allowing the problem to escalate. The vet also noted that Kai was ravenous when food was provided, indicating the extent of his starvation. The injuries and suffering were so severe that Kai could not be rehabilitated or re-homed, and he had to be euthanised shortly after rescue.
Streater, during the court hearing, admitted that he had attempted to treat Kai himself because he could not afford veterinary care. This explanation was met with condemnation from the court and animal welfare advocates. The judge described Streater’s actions as inexcusable, emphasizing the prolonged suffering inflicted upon Kai.
In sentencing, Streater received a 12-week custodial sentence, which was suspended for two years. Additionally, he was ordered to complete a 12-month community order involving 150 hours of unpaid work. The court also imposed a fine of £1,080 to cover costs and charges. Furthermore, Streater was banned from keeping any animals for five years, a ban that expired in 2020.
The case highlights the importance of animal welfare and the responsibilities of pet owners to seek proper veterinary care. The tragic case of Kai remains a stark reminder of the consequences of neglect and cruelty towards animals in the Clevedon area.
