NIGEL SMITH CAUGHT IN BRIDLINGTON BY ONLINE PAEDOPHILE HUNTERS

In March 2021, a disturbing case emerged involving Nigel Smith, a 50-year-old resident of Cardigan Road in Bridlington, who was apprehended after engaging in online conversations with individuals he believed to be underage girls.

The incident was uncovered by vigilant online paedophile hunting groups that posed as young girls to catch predators like Smith in the act.

According to court proceedings at Hull Crown Court, Smith carried out his illicit activities between October and November of 2019.

During this period, he sent explicit images of his genitals and solicited sexual acts from what he thought were three young girls.

In reality, these girls were adult women operating under false identities, pretending to be 12 and 13-year-olds.

Smith even proposed meeting one of these supposed minors at Beverley train station, suggesting they could pretend she was his daughter, which underscores the disturbing nature of his intentions.

Prosecutor Michele Stuart-Lofthouse detailed the extent of Smith’s misconduct, revealing that he had pleaded guilty to three charges of attempting to engage in sexual communications with minors.

The investigation was a collaborative effort involving three separate online vigilante groups, each working to expose predators like Smith.

The first undercover operation involved a woman who created an alias named Erin, claiming to be a 12-year-old girl, on October 25, 2019, using a dating website.

Two days later, on October 27, Smith initiated contact with this profile, acknowledging the age and continuing the conversation on WhatsApp.

During these exchanges, Smith requested explicit photographs, discussed sexual acts, and encouraged Erin to masturbate.

He also sent images of his face and genitals, and even described having sex with her, all while discussing the possibility of meeting up, though no actual meeting was arranged.

Further investigations revealed that Smith interacted with two other women from vigilante groups.

One was an alias named Ava, purportedly 12 years old, with whom he communicated on November 3, 2019.

The other was Lauren, a 13-year-old, with whom he conversed from November 14 to 21, 2019.

During these conversations, Smith expressed a desire to have sex and sent explicit images of his genitals.

He also suggested that Ava could meet him in Beverley, where he would meet her off the train, and falsely claimed that she could pretend to be his daughter if questioned.

Smith’s actions extended to sharing pornographic images of adults engaged in sexual acts, and he expressed hopes that Lauren would become a porn star after their interactions.

The third alias, Lauren, was created as part of the vigilante operation, and Smith was told she was 13 years old.

The conversations quickly turned sexual, with Smith asking to see Lauren naked and engaging in explicit discussions.

Following his arrest, police seized Smith’s phone, and he admitted to officers that he had been “just a bit stupid” during the cautioning process.

The court heard that Smith’s offending was influenced by personal circumstances, notably the breakdown of his marriage and feelings of loneliness.

His Honour Judge Mark Bury sentenced Smith to six months in prison, rejecting pleas for a suspended sentence.

The judge emphasized that although the profiles Smith believed he was communicating with were fabricated by vigilante groups, the harm caused by his actions was still significant.

He pointed out that Smith’s conduct involved sending explicit images, encouraging masturbation, and requesting photographs from the minors, which demonstrated a serious breach of trust and morality, even if the victims were not real children.

Overall, the case highlights the dangers of online predation and the importance of vigilant efforts by online groups to protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
