NIGEL LAY FROM ROMSEY CONVICTED OF RAPE AND COERCIVE CONTROL IN HAMPSHIRE

Nigel Lay, aged 56 and formerly residing on Barnes Close in West Wellow, has been found guilty of multiple serious charges following a comprehensive 12-day trial at Southampton Crown Court. The court proceedings revealed that the offences occurred over a span of four years, from 2016 to 2020, within the county of Hampshire, specifically involving the victim in her 50s.

During the trial, it was detailed that Lay subjected the woman to a prolonged period of coercive and controlling behaviour, which severely impacted her daily life. The victim testified that Lay exerted dominance over her in various aspects, including her financial resources, access to basic necessities such as food, lighting, and heating. This pattern of control was part of a broader pattern of abuse that persisted over several years.

In addition to the controlling behaviour, the jury was informed that Lay repeatedly committed acts of sexual violence against the woman, including multiple instances of rape. The victim described the experience as profoundly traumatic, emphasizing the emotional and psychological toll it has taken on her. She expressed that sharing her story in court was an extremely difficult process, filled with personal embarrassment and pain. However, she found the strength to testify in order to ensure that Lay would be held accountable for his actions.

Following the verdict, police staff investigator Keely Osborne, who led the case, spoke publicly about the impact of the trial. She acknowledged the bravery of the victim, who is described as vulnerable, as well as the support shown by her family and friends. Osborne emphasized that Lay’s behaviour has left lasting scars, both emotional and psychological, and expressed hope that the sentence handed down will aid in the victim’s path toward closure and recovery.

Osborne reaffirmed the police force’s commitment to thoroughly investigating all reports of sexual assault and domestic abuse, regardless of the circumstances. She highlighted that the police have a specially trained team dedicated to supporting victims and ensuring justice is served. The officer urged anyone who has experienced similar abuse to come forward, assuring them that they will be listened to and supported through the process.

In summary, Nigel Lay’s conviction marks a significant step in addressing serious offences of sexual violence and coercive control within Hampshire, and particularly in the Romsey area, where he previously resided. The case underscores the importance of victim support and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat domestic and sexual abuse.
