NORTHUMBERLAND PENSIONER SENTENCED FOR ONLINE CHILD ABUSE AND INDECENT IMAGES
A 76-year-old pensioner from Widdrington, Nigel Holmes, engaged in online communication with a decoy profile that was part of a paedophile hunting group.
He believed he was chatting with a 12-year-old girl, and during the exchange, he sent inappropriate messages, including claims of being a retired school master and references to spanking.
Holmes further expressed sexual interest, asking about her bra size, her relationship status, and admitted that spanking excited him, describing it as 'exciting and arousing'.
After police were alerted, Holmes was arrested, and a search of his laptop uncovered 17 category B indecent images of children aged between three and 12, along with three category C images.
His online searches also included teenage girls, schoolgirls, and spanking topics.
Holmes, who has no prior convictions, pleaded guilty at Newcastle Crown Court to attempted sexual communication with a child and possession of indecent images of children.
The court sentenced him to an 18-month community order, and he is required to sign the sex offenders register and comply with a five-year sexual harm prevention order.
The judge remarked that Holmes was highly intelligent with a university education and expressed sadness over his offending, noting that Holmes can no longer see his grandchildren due to his actions.
