NIGEL FRENCH CAUGHT SPYING ON GIRLS IN MERTHYR TYDFIL AND PENYDARREN SCHOOLS
In a shocking case that has sent ripples through the local community, Nigel French, a school caretaker from Merthyr Tydfil and Penydarren, has been found guilty of attempting voyeurism by secretly spying on girls in the shower area of a local school. The incident, which took place over the summer of 2012, has raised serious concerns about safety and trust within the educational environment.French, aged 51, who has served as a caretaker at the school for over two decades, had previously denied any wrongdoing. He is known locally as a dedicated churchgoer and former Scout leader, with a reputation for community involvement. However, his secret was uncovered during a routine inspection when assistant headteacher John Davies noticed suspicious activity in an area not typically accessed by staff.
The discovery occurred at the school’s gymnasium, where Mr. Davies observed French behind a stack of gym mats, seemingly looking through a small hole positioned directly above the girls’ changing rooms. Initially suspecting that French was simply resting or “skiving” from his duties, Mr. Davies approached the area, only to realize that something more sinister was at play.
Mr. Davies recounted that he had gone up to the viewing gallery, which also served as a makeshift storage space overlooking the school’s swimming pool, after hearing an unusual noise. It was then that he saw French’s feet protruding from behind the mats, followed by the moment French lifted his head above the obstacle. The sight prompted immediate concern and suspicion.
Retreating quickly, Mr. Davies returned with two other staff members to investigate further. Their efforts led to the discovery of a drilled hole in the floor, cleverly concealed beneath a carpet tile. This hole was directly above the girls’ shower cubicle in the changing rooms. Additionally, a tile from the suspended ceiling below had been moved aside to facilitate a better view. Further inspection revealed eight more holes above the boys’ changing rooms, indicating a systematic effort to spy on students.
It was also revealed that the girls’ and boys’ changing rooms had been swapped during a refurbishment approximately eight years prior, which may have facilitated the concealment of the voyeuristic setup. The evidence presented in court confirmed that French had been involved in this invasive activity, which shocked the community and raised questions about safeguarding in local schools.
French’s case is scheduled for sentencing at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court on August 6, where authorities will determine the appropriate legal consequences for his actions. The incident remains a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and security in educational institutions, especially when trusted staff members are involved in such serious misconduct.
