NIGAL SMITH'S HORRIFIC CRIMES IN LEICESTER: CHILD RAPE AND SEXUAL ABUSE SHOCK THE CITY
In a chilling case that has sent shockwaves through Leicester, Nigal Smith, a 54-year-old man from Southfields Drive off Saffron Lane, has been convicted of a series of heinous sexual offenses spanning over a decade. The court proceedings revealed the extent of his depravity, which included multiple counts of rape, indecent assault, and other sexual misconduct involving young girls and women.
These disturbing revelations came to light during a recent trial at Leicester Crown Court, where Judge Jinder Singh Boora sentenced Smith to a lengthy prison term of 20 years.
The judge did not hold back in condemning Smith, describing him as “evil,” “cruel,” and “wicked,” and emphasizing the profound damage he inflicted on his victims.
The court heard that Smith’s crimes ranged from assaults in the late 1990s through the early 2000s, with some incidents dating back to 1996 and continuing until 2007.
Despite requests from Leicestershire Police to publish Smith’s mugshot, the force declined, citing privacy concerns.
However, acquaintances of Smith, appalled by his actions, provided the media with photographs of him, seeking to ensure that the public is aware of his identity and the severity of his crimes.
Smith’s victims included two young women, one of whom was just 13 years old when he began abusing her, and the other starting at age 15.
During the trial, it was revealed that Smith used threats and coercion to silence his victims, warning one that if she screamed, he would kill her.
His assault on one woman escalated to the point where he forcibly entered her home, grabbed her by the throat, pinned her to the floor, and raped her.
In addition to his prison sentence, Smith was subjected to a lifelong sexual harm prevention order, which aims to restrict his contact with potential victims and remains in effect until a judge decides otherwise.
The court also heard harrowing testimonies from his victims, with one describing how the abuse had a devastating, long-lasting impact on her mental health.
She recounted how, from the age of 13, she developed a distorted, bleak view of the world, losing all hope and confidence due to Smith’s actions.
She expressed feelings of intense self-hatred, crying herself to sleep and wishing for death.
The second victim, who was unable to attend court due to a recent overdose and hospitalization, also provided a powerful statement.
She described feeling isolated, vulnerable, and haunted by flashbacks that made sleep impossible.
Her mental health had deteriorated to the point of chronic depression, and she struggled with night terrors and feelings of helplessness.
Judge Boora acknowledged the profound trauma inflicted upon both women, noting that they continue to suffer from suicidal thoughts and depression as a direct result of Smith’s crimes.
Throughout the proceedings, Smith displayed no visible remorse or emotion when hearing the impact statements from his victims.
The judge criticized his cold indifference, stating, “There wasn’t a slither of emotion.
You didn’t flinch.” This lack of empathy further underscored the severity of his character and the gravity of his offenses.
Leicestershire Police, led by Detective Constable Anna Blockley, praised the bravery of the victims who came forward to relive their horrifying experiences.
She highlighted that Smith’s offenses were repeated over many years, with threats and attempts to silence his victims through intimidation and offers of money.
The police emphasized the importance of victim courage in bringing Smith to justice and expressed hope that the lengthy sentence would serve as a warning to others.
Smith’s sentencing is scheduled for Friday, February 16, at Leicester Crown Court, where the full extent of his punishment will be finalized.
His case remains a stark reminder of the devastating impact of sexual violence and the importance of supporting victims through the justice process.
