NICHOLAS TURPIN FROM HARLOW SENTENCED FOR GROOMING AND SEXUAL ABUSE OF WELSH SCHOOLGIRL
In August 2021, a disturbing case involving Nicholas Turpin, a man from Harlow, was brought to light in court, revealing a pattern of grooming and sexual abuse directed at a young girl from Wales.The court heard that Turpin, who was approximately 30 years old at the time, engaged in a series of illicit encounters with a 13-year-old girl he had met through social media platforms.
Turpin made multiple trips from his residence in Harlow, Essex, to Wales, specifically Swansea and Neath Port Talbot, where he arranged to meet the young girl for sexual activities.
One particularly troubling incident involved him taking her shopping at Debenhams to purchase lingerie, followed by a visit to an Ann Summers store to buy a sex toy, which he later used on her.
On another occasion, he drove her to a secluded layby in the Swansea Valley, where they engaged in oral sex.
The court was informed that Turpin and the girl initially communicated via the social media site Faceparty, where he used the alias 'Nick the Chef' and falsely claimed to be 26 years old.
Despite the girl clearly stating she was only 13, their communication persisted through both the social media platform and subsequent text messaging, leading to numerous visits and sexual encounters over several months.
Further evidence revealed that Turpin had a tattoo inked on his arm, which was designed by the girl during her school art class.
She believed this tattoo symbolized his affection for her.
The relationship continued until the girl discovered that Turpin was a married man, which led her to end their contact.
She confided in her mother about the abuse but requested that she not involve the police at that time.
It was not until 2019 that the girl reported the abuse to authorities.
Although much of the message history had been deleted, she was able to recall Turpin’s email address, which ultimately led police to locate him.
During police interviews, Turpin denied any sexual activity with the girl and answered “no comment” to further questions.
When asked to show his tattoo for identification, he refused.
Nevertheless, the victim identified him during an identification procedure.
Turpin, who resides at Radburn Close, Harlow, Essex, pleaded guilty to two counts of indecency with a child.
The court noted that there were no charges related to full sexual intercourse, as the statute of limitations had expired for those offences.
It was also revealed that just months prior to grooming the Welsh girl, Turpin had been sentenced at St Albans Crown Court for possession of indecent images.
In a victim impact statement read aloud in court, the girl expressed her feelings of withdrawal from family and friends following the relationship.
She described herself as feeling like a “home-wrecker” because Turpin was married.
Reflecting on her experience, she acknowledged that she had been groomed by an older man who exploited her naivety.
She also admitted that the prospect of facing her abuser in court was deeply distressing.
Judge Catherine Richards addressed Turpin, condemning his actions as well-planned and manipulative, highlighting how he exploited the girl’s immaturity.
She noted that although Turpin’s life had moved on since the offending, the severity of his crimes warranted immediate custody.
Taking into account his guilty pleas, the judge sentenced him to five years in prison, with the possibility of serving up to half of that in custody before being released on licence.
Additionally, Turpin was subjected to a 15-year sexual harm prevention order, restricting his contact with young girls, and was designated a registered sex offender for life.
