GODALMING MAN SECTIONED FOR STABBING MUM TO DEATH
A man who had been detained under a mental health section for the murder of his mother was receiving treatment from mental health services when he committed the killing.Nicholas Steel, aged 57, stabbed his 79-year-old mother, Mary Steel, multiple times at her residence in Wey Court, Farncombe, on October 29.
The Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, responsible for his care, has begun an inquiry into the incident.
Steel, from Meadrow, Godalming, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was committed to an indefinite detention in a mental health hospital.
Billy Hatifani, the acting chief nurse of the trust, stated, "Nicholas was under the care of our community mental health recovery service at the time of the attack.
We are currently completing an investigation into the care, support, and treatment he received.
The insights from this investigation will help us improve our services.
Our thoughts are with Mary’s family and friends during this tragic time." At a sentencing hearing held at Guildford Crown Court on Thursday, Judge Robert Fraser announced that Steel’s detention would be for an unspecified, indefinite period.
