Nicholas Redgate, a 26-year-old man with a disturbing history of child-sex convictions, has been found guilty of serious breaches related to his previous sexual offences and grooming behaviors. Redgate, who resides on Consett Road in Blurton, Stoke-on-Trent, was under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) due to his past convictions, yet he continued to engage in inappropriate conduct involving minors.

The court heard that earlier this year, Redgate initiated a troubling pattern of grooming a 15-year-old girl over a span of four days. This behavior was uncovered during a hearing at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, where the seriousness of his actions was thoroughly examined. The case revealed that Redgate had approached two young girls while walking his dog, an encounter that set the stage for further inappropriate interactions.

According to the prosecution, Matthew Ness, Redgate subsequently met with one of the girls in a local shop, specifically a chip shop, and later in a nearby park. During these meetings, Redgate bought her food and made inappropriate comments, including a disturbing remark comparing her breasts to 'pillows.' These actions indicated a clear pattern of grooming and manipulation.

When questioned by authorities, Redgate was arrested and taken into custody. During his interview, he claimed that he only spoke to the girls when they approached him in the park, stating, “I only speak to them in the park when they come up to me and the dog.” However, he responded with a dismissive 'no comment' to further questions. His attitude during the interview was confrontational, as he declared, “The Judge is going to give me a minimum of two years anyway, f**k the system and f***k the judge.”

Legal representatives for Redgate, Kelly Cyples, argued that he was still young and mentally immature. She emphasized that he was close to leading a normal, law-abiding life, mentioning his efforts to find employment and secure accommodation. Despite these mitigating factors, the court was not convinced of his rehabilitation.

Redgate pleaded guilty to breaching his Sexual Harm Prevention Order, a violation that the court deemed extremely serious. The judge, Recorder Robert Smith, delivered a stern sentence of three years in prison. In his remarks, the judge criticized Redgate’s history of non-compliance, stating, “You have a truly awful record of complying with orders in this court.”

He further explained that the case represented the early stages of grooming behavior, noting that CCTV footage showed Redgate meeting the girl at the chip shop. The girl had expressed romantic interest in him, and there was evidence of discussions about running away together. The judge highlighted that a friend had confided in a teacher about the girl’s intentions to escape with Redgate, a much older man.

Recorder Smith emphasized the gravity of the breach, stating, “This is a very serious breach - your most serious breach - you engaged with teenage girls in conversation. I don't think for one moment the girl came to that conclusion - running away together - on her own accord, I think you suggested that.”

The judge also condemned Redgate’s obstructive behavior during court proceedings, asserting that his actions demonstrated a clear understanding of what he was doing. He concluded by warning that any future breaches would result in a minimum sentence of two years, underscoring the ongoing threat Redgate posed due to his sexual interest in children.
