NICHOLAS LEA, DECEITFUL SEX OFFENDER FROM PETERBOROUGH, JAILED AFTER EVADING POLICE IN CAMBRIDGESHIRE AND LONDON
In September 2019, a disturbing case unfolded involving Nicholas Lea, a registered sex offender from Peterborough, who managed to evade law enforcement authorities for over three months before finally being apprehended.The sequence of events highlights both his attempts to conceal his whereabouts and the persistent efforts of police to bring him to justice.
It all began on March 11, when officers from Cambridgeshire conducted a routine check on registered sex offenders within the region.
During this visit, they seized multiple electronic devices from Lea’s residence, aiming to review their contents for any violations of his registration conditions.
The investigation uncovered a shocking cache of over 26,000 images, with a significant portion classified as indecent.
Specifically, 5,491 images were categorized as grade C, 99 as grade B, and 88 as the most severe, grade A, indicating highly explicit and illegal material.
Realizing that the discovery of such images would lead to his immediate arrest, Lea took swift action to escape.
He left the area, traveling to London, where he attempted to alter his appearance in hopes of avoiding detection.
As part of his obligations under the Sex Offenders Register, Lea notified the Metropolitan Police Service of his new address in London.
However, law enforcement in Cambridgeshire quickly learned that the address he provided was fabricated, revealing his attempt to deceive authorities.
Lea, who was known to have no fixed address, further complicated matters by opening a new bank account in an effort to stay under the radar.
Despite these efforts, police tracked his financial activity across the country, which ultimately led them to a fuel station in Peterborough.
CCTV footage captured Lea leaving the station in a black Ford Mondeo, registered to him at Brightfield Business Hub on Bakewell Road, Orton Southgate.
Law enforcement officers responded promptly, locating the vehicle and subsequently finding Lea inside a nearby building.
Detective Constable Natalie Hebdon commented on the case, stating, “Lea is a deceitful and manipulative character who pre-planned his escape from the area after we seized his devices.
Four days after our initial visit, he opened a new bank account, bought a new car, registered a fake address, and went on the run.” Lea’s actions culminated in multiple charges, including four counts of failing to comply with the notification requirements of the Sex Offenders Register, breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and three counts of making indecent images of a child.
He admitted to these offences and appeared before Peterborough Crown Court on September 20.
The court sentenced him to a total of 20 months in prison.
Additionally, Lea was subjected to a new Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which will remain in effect for ten years, further restricting his activities and monitoring his conduct to protect the public from future harm.
