IRISH TEACHER SENTENCED TO THREE YEARS FOR CHILD ABUSE MATERIAL
Niall McLoughlin, a 59-year-old who previously taught at a secondary school in County Meath, was handed a three-year prison term after authorities uncovered nearly 6,000 images and videos of child exploitation on his tablet. He pleaded guilty at an early stage, leading to the termination of his employment, and was formally sentenced on June 12th.
The court was told that Tusla, the child and family agency, was contacted to remove him from his job, but they did not act promptly, which raised concerns with the police.
McLoughlin was involved in both sharing and viewing material depicting boys aged between five and 14 years performing sexual acts.
He admitted that such material aroused him, attributing his actions to boredom and addiction.
He also expressed remorse, describing himself as disgusted with his own behavior.
The investigation was initiated after police examined devices seized through a search warrant, discovering thousands of incriminating images and videos.
As a result, McLoughlin was placed on the sex offender registry indefinitely and received a suspended six-month sentence in addition to his prison term.
