CLOSEBURN MAN NIALL GRUBB SENTENCED FOR CHILD INDECENT IMAGES IN DUMFRIES

In October 2012, Niall Grubb, a 32-year-old man from Main Street, Closeburn, was sentenced after being found with over 200 indecent images. Grubb was convicted of possessing 221 extreme pornographic images at his home.
Sheriff Kenneth Ross sentenced him to 16 months in jail and ordered him to be on the sex offenders’ register for a decade. In addition, Grubb received a five-year period of extended supervision.
He admitted in court to being in possession of the images in January, which included depictions of rape and sex acts involving a man and an animal. He also pleaded guilty to sending indecent or obscene messages to a mobile phone in May of the previous year.
Children’s charity NSPCC described the case as “deeply distressing,” with Matt Forde, head of service for NSPCC Scotland, stating: “This is a deeply distressing case where a man has admitted creating many indecent images, showing extreme levels of child abuse. Behind these images are real children who have suffered terrible abuse and may require support and therapy to recover.
“People viewing these pictures contribute to the perpetuation of child sexual abuse and may also offend by contact with children.”
The police investigation was intelligence-led, carried out by Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary’s family protection unit. Detective Sergeant Bryan Lee warned, “This may be a computer-based crime but there are still victims involved. Anyone accessing these types of images should be warned that we will catch up with them.”
Matt Forde emphasized the importance of risk assessment and treatment for offenders, stating, “All such offenders need comprehensive risk assessment and treatment to reduce the risk of further offences.”
