NEILL BECKETT SHAMES NORTHERN IRELAND: EX-SCHOOL WELFARE OFFICER AND ARMY CADET LEADER GUILTY OF SEXUAL ASSAULTS ON TEENAGERS

A man with a troubling history of involvement in educational and military youth programs in Northern Ireland has been convicted of multiple serious sexual offenses against teenage girls. Neill Beckett, aged 43, who resides in Kilmore near Crossgar in County Down, was found guilty after a lengthy trial that revealed disturbing details of his misconduct spanning nearly a decade.

According to the court, Beckett was responsible for abusing his position of trust and authority over vulnerable young individuals. The charges against him included 16 counts of sexual assault and one count of sexual grooming, all committed over an eight-year period from 2015 to 2023. The victims, eleven in total, included nine pupils from Lagan College and two young individuals who were Army cadets under his supervision.

During the proceedings, the court heard harrowing testimonies from the victims, describing how Beckett had engaged in inappropriate physical contact, including hugging, kissing, and touching their thighs beneath their skirts. Some victims recounted instances where he had tickled them in a manner that made them feel uncomfortable and intimidated. These actions, as described in court, were carried out in a manner that exploited his authority and left the victims feeling distressed and unsafe.

It is important to note that Beckett was acquitted of more serious allegations, including a charge of rape, which was alleged to have occurred between 2013 and 2015 when he was serving as an Army cadet leader. He was also found not guilty of sexual communication with a child and ten additional counts of sexual assault, indicating that the jury did not find sufficient evidence to convict him on those charges.

The trial, which lasted five weeks, was marked by detailed testimonies from the victims, who described the uncomfortable and inappropriate conduct they endured.
