NATHAN SMITH AND BRAVE TEENAGE GIRL IN LONDON

A 15-year-old girl from Surrey was recognized for her extraordinary courage after she successfully fought off a sexual attacker in Ewell, near the station, and managed to escape unharmed.

The incident took place in a narrow alleyway adjacent to Ewell station, where the young girl was walking when she was abruptly approached from behind by a man with malicious intent.

According to reports, the assailant, later identified as Nathan Smith, 32, of Revelon Road in Lewisham, London, first inappropriately touched her without consent and then attempted to force her against a nearby fence.

During the struggle, the young victim resisted fiercely, fighting off the attacker who responded by punching her in the head.

Despite the assault, she was able to deliver a firm kick to Smith, which gave her the chance to break free and run home to safety.

Authorities swiftly responded to the incident by utilizing CCTV footage captured at Ewell station, alongside advanced facial recognition software.

This evidentiary approach led to the identification of Nathan Smith as the suspect involved in the attack.

The police were quick to act on this information, and Smith was later located and arrested in London for shoplifting, which was a part of the ongoing investigation.

At the time of his arrest, Smith was flagged as a wanted individual on the police's shared database, and he was subsequently transferred to Surrey to face questioning regarding the sexual assault.

During police interviews, Smith denied the serious allegations and appeared to attempt to confuse the officers with inconsistent explanations about his presence in the alleyway that evening.

However, surveillance footage played a crucial role in exposing the truth.

The CCTV footage from the area showed Smith leaving Ewell station and repeatedly walking up and down the alleyway before returning to the station.

Moments later, surveillance captured him noticing the young girl disembarking from a train and walking toward the alley, after which he followed her.

This undeniable visual evidence was instrumental in establishing Smith’s presence and actions around the time of the assault.

Smith was brought before Guildford Crown Court, where he faced charges of sexual assault and common assault.

On February 3, he was convicted on both counts.

The court sentenced him to six years in prison, with an additional four years to be served under supervision on license.

Furthermore, Smith was ordered to be registered as a sex offender for life, given the gravity of his crimes.

The young girl, now 16, was duly honored for her bravery.

She received the High Sheriff award from a judge, acknowledging her remarkable courage during such a traumatic ordeal.

Detective Constable Nicola Dell, who led the investigation, praised the victim’s resilience: “This outcome is a true testament to the victim, who displayed astounding bravery from the moment she fought him off and throughout the court proceedings.

Her testimony made it clear to the jury the premeditated and heinous intent behind Smith’s actions that day.” She continued: “Not only has she endured a terrifying incident, but she has also managed to excel in her exams while supporting our investigative efforts.

The entire team is incredibly proud of her achievements.

From the start, we were committed to bringing Smith to justice, deploying every resource available, including CCTV and facial recognition technology.” Expressing her concern, Detective Dell emphasized the danger Smith posed: “He is a clearly dangerous sexual predator and should not be allowed to threaten the safety of women and girls who have every right to walk home feeling secure.” The victim and her family also issued a statement, thanking Surrey Police sincerely: “We want to thank Surrey Police from the bottom of our hearts for their care, support, and professionalism in ensuring this criminal was brought to justice.

Knowing that justice has been served will significantly aid our healing process.” Finally, authorities continue to encourage survivors of sexual assault to come forward, whether directly to police, through support services, or by confiding in someone they trust, such as healthcare professionals.

The message remains clear: no one should suffer in silence, and help is available for those in need.
