Chelmsford Sexual Abuser
In a disturbing series of events that unfolded over a seven-month period, Nathan Grimsey, a 20-year-old van driver from Chelmsford, was found guilty of repeatedly exposing himself to a young girl, all while operating his vehicle in public spaces around Chelmsford. The incidents, which caused significant concern and alarm within the community, culminated in Grimsey's arrest and subsequent court proceedings held at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court.
Grimsey, who also maintains a YouTube channel where he posts vlogs about his daily life, appeared via video link from a prison in Norwich, where he had been held in custody since his arrest. The court was informed that Grimsey had admitted to three separate charges of exposure, all involving the same 12-year-old girl, and the case was now at the sentencing stage.
The first incident was reported to have occurred in December 2017. According to the prosecution, Danielle Jones, a representative of the Crown, described how a 12-year-old girl saw Grimsey sitting alone in a bronze-colored van. She observed him masturbating with his penis exposed. The girl, understandably distressed, ran away from the scene. However, Grimsey allegedly drove after her, blocking her path and causing her to flee to her home to seek safety and inform her mother.
The second incident took place on July 5 of the following year. On this occasion, the same girl was out with two friends when they noticed Grimsey’s van parked halfway up the pavement. As they cycled past, they saw Grimsey again with his penis exposed and engaged in masturbation. The girls approached a nearby individual to report what they had seen. When this person attempted to approach Grimsey, he drove off quickly, evading immediate confrontation.
The third and most recent incident occurred on July 15. This time, the girl was alone. She saw Grimsey’s van pass by and recognized him with his penis exposed once more. She promptly went inside her home and informed her mother. A group of bystanders then went outside to try and apprehend Grimsey. Several individuals managed to detain him and questioned him about his actions. The police arrived at the scene to find approximately 70 people gathered around. Grimsey, who had been assaulted during the incident, did not identify his attackers, and no one admitted to the assault. He was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries before being taken into custody.
During the court hearing, Judge Woollard took into account Grimsey’s early guilty plea, his lack of previous convictions, and his ADHD diagnosis when determining the sentence. Grimsey was sentenced to a six-month Youth Detention and Training Order (DTO) for each of the three charges, with all sentences to run concurrently but suspended for two years. Additionally, Grimsey was ordered to participate in 36 sessions of an accredited rehabilitation program and to complete 120 hours of unpaid community service over the course of a year.
Further penalties included a 40-day rehabilitation activity requirement (RAH) and a seven-year registration as a sex offender. A sexual harm prevention order was also imposed for five years, which prohibits Grimsey from entering within 100 metres of any school or designated children’s meeting places. His driving privileges were revoked for 12 months, specifically disqualifying him from holding or obtaining a driving license due to the use of his van in the incidents. The court also ordered Grimsey to pay £85 in prosecution costs and a victim surcharge of £115, reflecting the seriousness of his offenses and the impact on the community.
