NATHAN ASHTON SENTENCED IN LONDON FOR RAPE IN SHOREDITCH AND ROMFORD
A semi-professional football player from London has been sentenced to serve a lengthy prison term after being convicted of raping a woman during a night out in Shoreditch.Nathan Ashton, aged 27, received a 16-year prison sentence at Reading Crown Court on Tuesday, July 16, after a jury found him guilty of the serious crime, despite his initial denial, claiming that the sexual encounter was consensual.
The incident occurred in the early hours of a night in 2023, following an evening spent at a bar in Shoreditch, where Ashton and the woman, along with a group of friends, had been socializing.
After the night out, the woman and her two friends accepted an offer from Ashton for a lift home.
During the journey, she reported to police that Ashton had been touching her inappropriately throughout the evening, which left her feeling increasingly guarded and vulnerable.
Upon arriving at a residence in Romford, Ashton chose to stay with the three women.
Later that night, after they had all gone to bed and fallen asleep in separate rooms, Ashton entered the victim’s room and committed the assault.
The woman immediately reported the attack to the police, prompting an investigation into the matter.
Ashton was subsequently brought in for questioning at a local police station.
During interrogation, he denied the allegations, insisting that the sexual activity was consensual.
However, the jury did not believe his account, and the court found him guilty of rape.
Ashton, who is known to have no fixed address, was handed a 16-year prison sentence for his actions.
Detective Sergeant Ben Wallen, who led the investigation, commented on the case: “Our officers were meticulous in their investigation against Ashton and secured a great outcome as a result.
The victim-survivor is extremely brave reporting this to the police, and we encourage all victims to come forward and speak with our specialist officers to help remove these prolific offenders off our streets.” He further emphasized the police’s commitment to supporting victims: “We remain dedicated in providing support to rape victims and protecting women and girls from predatory offenders, and I would encourage anyone who has been a victim to go to the police.” The Metropolitan Police has also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve how they investigate sexual assault cases.
A police spokesperson explained that their new approach places greater emphasis on understanding the suspect’s background, moving away from focusing solely on the victim’s credibility.
This shift aims to make the reporting process less invasive and more accessible for victims, acknowledging the trauma they endure when coming forward with such allegations.
