NATALIE KILGALLON'S HORRIFIC NEGLECT IN COWGATE LEADS TO DOG'S DEATH
In a disturbing case of animal neglect, Natalie Kilgallon, born on December 31, 1986, and residing at Eastern Way, Newcastle Upon Tyne NE5 3HS, was found guilty of leaving her Dogue de Bordeaux, Millie, in deplorable conditions for an extended period. The incident took place between June 5 and June 13, 2016, in her residence located in Cowgate, Newcastle.During this time, Kilgallon left her dog alone at her home, neglecting her basic needs and well-being. The situation came to light when a concerned passer-by noticed Millie in Kilgallon's backyard, visibly suffering from severe neglect. Shocked by the dog's emaciated state, the observer took a photograph and posted it on Facebook, bringing the issue to public attention. Kilgallon, upon seeing the post, was finally compelled to retrieve her dog, but the damage had already been done.
Animal welfare authorities, specifically the RSPCA, were alerted to the situation. Inspectors responded promptly and seized Millie from Kilgallon's mother’s residence. Upon examination, veterinary professionals found the dog in a dire state. Millie’s ribs were easily visible, indicating extreme malnutrition, and she had suffered significant muscle loss. Her coat was greasy, and her ears emitted a strong yeast smell, all signs of neglect and poor health.
Transported to the veterinary clinic, Millie vomited during the journey. The veterinarian concluded that the vomiting was caused by an overly large meal, likely administered in a desperate attempt to feed her. Further examination revealed that Millie had been suffering from chronic kidney disease for a prolonged period, a condition that had gone unnoticed and untreated. The veterinarian determined that her suffering was too severe, and Millie was euthanized to end her pain.
Initially, Kilgallon claimed she had asked a friend to look after Millie during her absence, but she later admitted during an interview that this was a lie and that she had made no arrangements for her dog’s care. Her neglect and dishonesty led to her being prosecuted and sentenced.
In court, Kilgallon received a one-year community order, along with fines totaling £200, which included costs. Additionally, she was banned from keeping dogs for five years, although this ban expired in January 2022.
As of late 2020, her address was listed as Merlay Hall, Greenford Road, Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne NE6 3XE, reflecting her continued residence in the area. This case highlights the tragic consequences of animal neglect and the importance of animal welfare enforcement in Newcastle and beyond.
