UBER DRIVER JAILED FOR RAPING DRUNK PASSENGER AND TAKING SELFIE
Muhammad Durrani, a 38-year-old man from Streatham, south west London, was sentenced to a total of 12 years in prison for raping a drunk passenger and taking a selfie with her in his vehicle.
The incident occurred in July last year after Durrani drove the 27-year-old woman home from a night out.
The victim, who was heavily intoxicated, ordered an Uber expecting a reputable service, and fell asleep during the ride.
Disoriented at her doorstep, she struggled to find her keys before Durrani carried her to his car where he committed the rape.
He also took selfies with her, at least one of which exposed her breast.
During the sentencing at Southwark Crown Court, Judge David Tomlinson described the impact on the victim as incalculable and emphasized that Durrani was aware she was almost paralytically drunk when he picked her up.
Durrani claimed the sexual encounter was consensual but was found guilty of rape and assault by penetration by a jury.
Durrani was sentenced to 12 years for the rape and 8 years for the assault, to run concurrently.
He was also banned from working in the taxi trade and was issued a restraining order along with a sexual harm prevention order.
The case raised concerns about Uber's background checks and reporting procedures following the incident.
