MOHAMMED BARI FROM ESSEX SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS FOR ABUSING VULNERABLE MAN IN SOUTHEND

A man identified as Mohammed Bari has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 12 years after being found guilty of sexually abusing a vulnerable individual under his care in Essex.

The disturbing case unfolded in Southend, where Bari, a 22-year-old carer, exploited his position of trust to commit a series of heinous acts against a 65-year-old man suffering from depression and dementia.

In 2016, Bari secured employment as a caregiver, a role that placed him in close and ongoing contact with his vulnerable patient.

Over the course of his employment, which lasted for several months, Bari engaged in a sustained campaign of sexual abuse.

The abuse was not a one-time incident but involved multiple occasions where Bari forced the elderly man to perform degrading sexual acts on him.

These acts took place repeatedly within the confines of the victim’s own home, where Bari was entrusted to provide care and support.

The victim, who was unable to fully defend himself due to his mental health condition, eventually confided in another carer about the abuse in July 2017.

This disclosure prompted immediate action, leading to Bari’s suspension from his duties.

Authorities then charged him with sexual activity with a person suffering from a mental disorder, reflecting the severity of his misconduct.

Following a trial at Basildon Crown Court earlier this year, a jury reached a majority verdict convicting Bari on two counts of sexual assault.

He was acquitted of a third charge.

During the proceedings, evidence was presented that detailed the extent of Bari’s abuse, including a tape recording made by the victim in which he described the abuse he endured.

The court heard that Bari had also denied performing sexual acts on himself in the presence of the victim during the trial but later admitted to doing so.

Judge Samantha Cohen presided over the case at Chelmsford Crown Court, where she delivered a stern and condemning judgment.

She emphasized the gravity of Bari’s betrayal of trust, noting that he stayed overnight in the victim’s home and held authority over him akin to that of a parent.

The judge described Bari’s actions as grotesque and pointed out that his claim of helping the victim relax was a blatant lie.

She highlighted that the victim was manipulated into silence, being made to promise not to tell anyone, but he eventually confided in another carer, which led to Bari’s downfall.

The judge also acknowledged the emotional toll on the victim, who was visibly distressed and fearful, as evidenced by the recording and his victim statement.

Although the victim passed away in May 2019, the court recognized that Bari’s actions contributed to the despair and trauma experienced by the victim in the final years of his life.

The court clarified that Bari was not responsible for the victim’s death but was accountable for the emotional suffering inflicted upon him.

Throughout the trial, Bari maintained denial of his actions, refusing to accept the jury’s verdict.

Judge Cohen criticized his lack of remorse, noting that his continual denial and changing stories made it difficult to understand his motives.

She suggested that Bari’s conduct might have been driven by sexual attraction or a desire for power, given the repeated nature of the offenses over many months.

In sentencing, Judge Cohen imposed a term of 12 years of detention.

She also stated that Bari would serve a minimum of two years on license following his release, ensuring supervision and monitoring for a significant period after his imprisonment.
