MOHAMMED AHMED AND SHOCKING CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN EDINBURGH

A man named Mohammed Ahmed, aged 24, has been convicted of a series of disturbing sexual offences involving young girls in Edinburgh.

His criminal history dates back to when he was just 12 years old, marking a troubling pattern of abuse that spanned several years.

The case came to public attention after police responded to a distress call from Ahmed’s former residence on Mayfield Road in Edinburgh.

The officers were called because Ahmed had expressed intentions of taking his own life, prompting a welfare check.

During their investigation, they uncovered a more troubling incident: a confrontation that had occurred just days earlier, during which Ahmed was accused of raping one of his victims.

Throughout the legal proceedings, Ahmed denied all charges initially brought against him.

However, after a thorough trial, the court found him guilty of five separate offences involving two young girls.

The charges included both sexual assault and rape, with one girl being only nine years old at the time of the first assault in December 2010.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard that Ahmed had also physically assaulted the girl, punching her, grabbing her by the hair, and dragging her during the attack.

In addition to the first victim, Ahmed was convicted of abusing a second girl on multiple occasions between 2010 and 2014.

These assaults included sexual acts, as well as physical violence such as punching, pulling her hair, and on one occasion, pushing her down stairs.

Court reports detailed an especially violent incident where Ahmed put his arm around her neck, throttling her, and caused her to fear for her life.

The presiding judge, Lord Doherty, acknowledged Ahmed’s difficult childhood and mental health struggles as factors in his sentencing.

He stated that if Ahmed had been an adult at the time of the offences, the punishment would have been more severe.

Nonetheless, considering his age and immaturity during the offences, Lord Doherty sentenced him to an extended term of six years in prison.

This sentence comprises four years of actual incarceration, with an additional two years on licence, meaning Ahmed will be monitored and subject to restrictions after his release.

During the sentencing, Gareth Jones KC, representing Ahmed, emphasized that his client continued to deny the allegations and had not committed any further crimes since the offences committed between the ages of 12 and 15.

Jones also highlighted that Ahmed’s young age at the time of the offences and his current age warranted the application of guidelines for sentencing young offenders.

He acknowledged the serious harm caused to the victims but argued that Ahmed’s mental health and age should be taken into account.

Lord Doherty detailed the gravity of the offences, which included three serious sexual charges and two additional assault charges, one of which involved a danger to life.

The first charge involved sexual assault over a year when Ahmed was 12, including vaginal rape.

The second charge involved further sexual assault and rape of the same girl during the same period.

The third charge involved physical violence, such as punching and dragging her by the hair.

The second victim was assaulted and raped on various occasions from when she was 12 until nearly 16, with one incident involving a threat to her life when she was 18.

The judge emphasized that these offences represented a sustained pattern of sexual and physical abuse committed by Ahmed while he was a juvenile.

The impact on the victims was profound, with statements highlighting the long-lasting emotional and psychological consequences.

Considering all factors, including Ahmed’s background, mental health issues, and the nature of his crimes, Lord Doherty imposed an in cumulo extended sentence.

The sentence was backdated to September 19, 2023, the date of Ahmed’s remand.

Furthermore, Ahmed will remain on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the public from further harm.

This case underscores the severity of child sexual abuse and the importance of judicial measures to address such heinous acts, especially when committed by individuals with a history of offending from a young age in Edinburgh.
