SCARBOROUGH OFFENDER SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS FOR RAPE AND ATTEMPTED RAPE
Sentence has been handed down to Mitko Naskov, a 19-year-old man from Scarborough, who was convicted of raping a young woman in a brutal attack.Reports state that Naskov approached the woman on the street before grabbing her and lifting her off her feet, forcing her into an alleyway off North Street in Scarborough.
During the assault, as the woman pleaded for him to stop, Naskov told her, ‘It’s ok’, and proceeded to attempt to rape her a second time.
Despite her pleas and begging him to leave her alone, he continued his assault.
The victim was found in a distressed state after the attack, which was witnessed by three women who responded to her cries for help.
One woman chased Naskov through the town centre, but he managed to escape, discarding his shirt in the process.
CCTV footage captured his fleeing image, revealing a large tattoo, and he was later identified via this evidence.
Police responded swiftly, arresting Naskov at his flat about 15 hours later in Pavilion Square, Scarborough.
He refused to cooperate during police questioning and declined to provide a DNA sample or fingerprint.
Naskov, a Bulgarian national, explained to the court that he moved to the UK after a friend promised him well-paid work.
The trial revealed these details, and the judge sentenced him to 12 years in jail along with a further four years extended license period for the crimes of rape and attempted rape.
The court was told that after the attack, Naskov ran away with his shirt off as three women approached to help the victim.
The judge praised the police officers involved in the investigation, as well as the women who assisted the victim, awarding a total of £500 in recognition of their bravery.
