MIRZABEK TOSHPLULATOV SENTENCED IN SOMERSET FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT IN WELLINGTON
A man identified as Mirzabek Toshpulatov has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term following his conviction for a serious sexual assault that took place in Wellington, Somerset, during the early hours of Sunday, February 26, 2023.The incident occurred in the White Hart Lane area, where the 21-year-old attacker targeted a young woman in what authorities describe as a disturbing and violent assault.
According to reports, the woman was attacked and sexually assaulted by Toshpulatov during the late-night hours after she had been out for the evening.
Despite the assault, she managed to break free from her attacker and immediately contacted the police to report the incident.
Her quick thinking and bravery played a crucial role in initiating the investigation that followed.
Later that day, law enforcement issued a public appeal for witnesses, hoping to gather information that could lead to the identification and apprehension of the suspect.
The appeal proved effective, as it helped officers pinpoint Toshpulatov as the perpetrator.
However, by that time, he had already fled the area, making it difficult for authorities to arrest him immediately.
It was not until October 2023 that Toshpulatov was located and detained in Essex, far from the scene of the crime.
Previously residing on North Street in Wellington, he was taken into custody and subsequently brought back to face justice.
On Friday, February 16, at Taunton Crown Court—currently temporarily relocated to North Somerset Courthouse—Toshpulatov was sentenced to an extended term of 11 years and three months in prison.
The court also ordered that the final three years of his sentence be served on licence, emphasizing the seriousness of his crimes.
Toshpulatov had previously pleaded guilty to charges of sexual assault by penetration and sexual assault by touching, which contributed to the court’s decision.
In addition to his custodial sentence, the court mandated that Toshpulatov register as a sex offender for life.
This registration requires him to regularly inform police of his whereabouts and living arrangements, ensuring ongoing monitoring and public safety.
The victim, in a statement read during the court proceedings, expressed the profound and lasting impact the assault has had on her life.
She described feeling “unsafe when walking anywhere” and recounted her emotional distress following the attack.
She explained that after the assault, she was overwhelmed and struggled to comprehend what had happened.
Her statement highlighted the ongoing trauma and the effect on her family, who remain deeply concerned for her safety and fear that such an incident could happen again to her or others.
Detective Constable Natalie Norman, who led the investigation, emphasized the rarity of such incidents in Wellington, noting that it was especially unusual for a stranger to commit such a crime in the area.
She praised the victim’s courage in reporting the assault, which was instrumental in bringing Toshpulatov to justice.
Norman also acknowledged the importance of public cooperation, stating that the witness appeal and subsequent tips from the community were vital in tracking Toshpulatov’s movements to Essex.
Furthermore, DC Norman urged the public to remain vigilant and to report any safety concerns through the StreetSafe tool.
This initiative allows police to collaborate with other agencies to identify areas of concern and plan targeted patrols to enhance community safety.
She expressed hope that the significant custodial sentence would serve as a deterrent and reassure victims of sexual abuse that their reports are taken seriously and that justice will be pursued relentlessly.
Overall, this case underscores the importance of community cooperation, swift law enforcement response, and the ongoing commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals from sexual violence.
The court’s decision reflects the gravity of Toshpulatov’s crimes and aims to send a clear message that such offenses will be met with severe consequences.
