Tuebrook Everton Rapist
In a chilling series of crimes that have shocked the communities of Everton and Tuebrook, Michael Young, aged 28, was sentenced to life imprisonment for a series of heinous sexual offenses committed in Liverpool. The court heard how Young, a convicted sex offender, left a 15-year-old girl pregnant and living in constant fear of contracting hepatitis C, a serious blood-borne disease he knew he carried.

The incident took place in June of the previous year, shortly after Young’s release from prison, where he had served time for the assault of a 14-year-old girl. Young’s criminal history is marked by violent and predatory behavior, including dragging his young victim into bushes to carry out his assault. His latest attack occurred near the Port of Liverpool building, close to Pier Head, in the early hours of June 15.

According to Liverpool Crown Court, Young’s victim was a vulnerable young girl who had recently ended a relationship with her boyfriend. The court was told that Young befriended her while working at a bar in the city center. Exploiting her vulnerability, he lured her to a secluded area where he committed a planned sexual assault. During the attack, Young pushed her to the ground and muffled her cries by covering her mouth with his hand, showing a blatant disregard for her safety and well-being.

Judge Stephen Everett described Young’s actions as utterly callous, emphasizing that he showed no concern for the girl’s distress. The court was informed that Young was aware he was infected with hepatitis C at the time of the assault, which added a layer of danger to the incident. The girl, believing she had become pregnant as a result of the assault, chose to terminate her pregnancy, a decision that underscores the profound trauma inflicted upon her.

Following the attack, Young walked back into the city center holding the girl’s hand, seemingly unperturbed. However, police officers, who had been alerted to the incident, quickly confronted him. The girl immediately disclosed what had happened to the officers, providing crucial evidence that led to his arrest. Judge Everett noted that Young likely hoped the girl would dismiss the incident as a one-time terrible experience, but her courage in reporting the crime was pivotal.

The court heard that the girl endured a prolonged and terrifying ordeal, uncertain of what Young might do next and living in fear of further violence. Despite denying the rape, Young was convicted after a trial, with the judge describing him as a high risk to women, especially teenage girls. The judge made it clear that Young would face significant hurdles if he ever sought parole, emphasizing that his actions demonstrated a reckless disregard for others.

Detective Constable Anna Hackett of Merseyside Police expressed her condemnation of Young’s actions, stating, “Michael Young put his victim through a terrifying ordeal which I have no doubt will stay with her for the rest of her life. He befriended her while she was out in Liverpool and pretended to want to help her, but instead subjected her to a sustained and violent attack. Fortunately, someone heard her shouting for help, and officers arrested Young shortly afterward. His sentence reflects the seriousness of his crimes, and now that he is behind bars, he cannot harm other women. The victim has shown remarkable bravery and resilience over the past eight months since the attack.”

In a separate case from April 2007, Young, then aged 21 and residing in Tuebrook, was sentenced to an indefinite jail term for grooming and raping a 14-year-old girl through text messaging. The court heard how Young obtained her phone number from a mutual friend and used a two-week campaign of messages to gain her trust. He then lured her into bushes in Kirkby, where he assaulted her after gaining her confidence.

The young girl, described as naive and young for her age by her parents, was manipulated into believing Young was 16. During a police interview, she recounted how Young placed his hands around her throat and covered her mouth as she screamed for help. She managed to escape partially dressed and ran to a nearby house for safety.

Detective Inspector Chris Green of Merseyside Police highlighted the dangers posed by modern communication methods, noting that text messaging and picture sharing are increasingly used by predators to groom young victims. He praised the bravery of the girl and her family, who have endured a harrowing ordeal. Her mother expressed hope for a fresh start now that Young is incarcerated, emphasizing her daughter’s resilience and the support they received from the community. Her father also commended the police for their diligent work in bringing Young to justice, expressing gratitude to the anonymous elderly lady who helped his daughter during her distress.
