MICHAEL TURNER FROM HAMSTERLEY CONVICTED FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE IMAGES IN DURHAM
In January 2021, the reputation of Michael Turner, a retired teacher from near Hamsterley, was severely damaged following his conviction related to the possession and download of indecent images of children. Turner, aged 72, was found to have engaged in viewing such material, which he claimed was driven by a desire to find more stimulating content after becoming desensitized to adult pornography. The incident came to light when police officers visited Turner's residence, located close to Hamsterley village, on January 20 of the previous year. The officers had been investigating reports of illegal online activity, which led them to seize a laptop computer belonging to Turner. An analysis of the device's hard drive uncovered a disturbing collection of 179 images that had been downloaded between August and November 2019.
Prosecutor Ian Cook revealed that out of these images, 54 were classified as the most serious category, depicting young girls as young as ten being subjected to abuse. Turner, who resides on Shull Bank near Hamsterley, admitted to three counts of making indecent images of children during the court proceedings.
Representing Turner, lawyer John Turner expressed his client's genuine remorse and noted that he had not attempted to deny or minimize his actions since his arrest. The defense also highlighted that Turner had taken steps toward rehabilitation by seeking therapy to address his behavior. The lawyer emphasized that Turner recognized the disturbing reality that what he viewed virtually was, in fact, harm inflicted upon real children. Testimonials from friends and family members, described as respectable and shocked by his conduct, were presented to the court in support of his remorse.
Judge Ray Singh addressed the court, condemning Turner's actions and the damage caused to his reputation. The judge remarked, “They must be thoroughly ashamed and disgusted at your behaviour. It’s significantly more shocking, given you were involved in teaching. You, more than anybody, must know about safeguarding issues and the harm caused to young individuals. Yet, for your own gratification, you viewed these images. Your reputation is in tatters and you have no-one else to blame but yourself.”
As a result of his conviction, Judge Singh sentenced Turner to ten months in prison, suspended for two years. Additionally, Turner was ordered to participate in 40 rehabilitation activity sessions with the Probation Service. He was also placed under restrictions concerning his future use of the internet through a Sexual Harm Prevention Order. Furthermore, Turner is required to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years, reflecting the seriousness of his offences and the ongoing risk to the community.
