MICHAEL ROSS FROM HARTLEPOOL CAUGHT WITH DECADE-OLD CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IMAGES
In December 2017, a disturbing case emerged involving Michael Ross, a 69-year-old resident of Hartlepool, who confessed to a prolonged period of accessing and downloading child sexual abuse images from the internet. The investigation revealed that Ross had been engaging in this illicit activity for approximately ten years, a revelation that shocked both the local community and the authorities.
According to reports presented at Teesside Crown Court, law enforcement officials received intelligence indicating that an internet address associated with illegal content was being actively used.
Tracing this address led investigators directly to Ross’s residence in Hartlepool.
Upon executing a search warrant, police officers found Ross at his home on Throston Close, where he was candid with them about his online activities.
He admitted that he had been viewing such images for about a decade, a confession that marked a significant breakthrough in the case.
During the search, authorities uncovered a total of nine devices capable of storing digital content, all of which contained indecent images.
The police seized these devices and subsequently analyzed their contents, revealing a disturbing collection of material.
Among the images found were 41 of the most serious Category A images, 32 Category B images, and approximately 2,895 images classified as Category C.
Additionally, there were 272 images depicting extreme pornography, further underscoring the severity of the material involved.
Ross, who resides at Throston Close in Hartlepool, faced multiple charges.
He admitted to three counts of possessing indecent images of children and one count of possessing extreme pornography, all relating to activities on August 20 of the previous year.
His admission was considered a significant step in the legal process, and the court took note of his frankness during the proceedings.
Judge Simon Bourne-Arton presided over the case and sentenced Ross to a six-month prison term, which was suspended for two years.
The judge emphasized that the community’s safety and Ross’s rehabilitation were better served through treatment rather than incarceration.
He acknowledged that most of the images were of a less serious nature, which influenced his decision.
Furthermore, Ross was subjected to strict conditions.
An order was issued to restrict his internet access indefinitely, and he was banned from having unsupervised contact with children for the foreseeable future.
Additionally, he is required to register as a sex offender for a period of seven years.
The court also ordered that all computer equipment seized during the investigation be destroyed to prevent further misuse.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat online child exploitation and underscores the importance of vigilance and swift action in addressing such heinous crimes in Hartlepool and beyond.
