MICHAEL RILEY CAUGHT IN STOCKPORT BUS STATION PAEDOPHILE STING
In a significant crackdown on online child sexual offences, Michael Riley, a 26-year-old man from central Stockport, has been sentenced to three years in prison following his arrest at a bus station in Stockport.The incident was part of a covert operation carried out by a volunteer group known as Defending the Innocent, which specializes in identifying individuals who engage in inappropriate online communications with minors.
Riley’s arrest was the culmination of an undercover sting that was live-streamed on Facebook, drawing attention to the ongoing efforts to combat online child exploitation.
The group had been monitoring Riley’s online activity, during which he was using a dating platform called Meet 4 U.
Posing as a 12-year-old girl named Nina, members of the group engaged Riley in conversation, which eventually moved to WhatsApp.
During their online exchanges, Riley expressed interest in meeting ‘Nina’ in person.
He arranged to meet her at Stockport Bus Station, located on Daw Bank, on the afternoon of January 25 of this year.
As part of the plan, Riley sent a photograph of himself along with a description of his attire, indicating his intent to meet the minor.
When Riley arrived at the designated location, he was met by two members of the volunteer group.
They had been waiting for him and presented him with printed copies of the chat history between him and ‘Nina,’ effectively trapping him in the act.
The confrontation was recorded and subsequently shared online to raise awareness about such predatory behavior.
Following his arrest, Riley admitted to grooming and attempting to engage a child under the age of 13 in sexual activity during an earlier hearing.
At Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court, he was sentenced to three years imprisonment.
Additionally, Riley was handed a 10-year sexual harm prevention order, which prohibits him from working with children for the rest of his life, underscoring the severity of his crimes and the ongoing efforts to protect minors from exploitation.
