MICHAEL PARKINSON SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEXUAL OFFENCES AND INDECENT IMAGES IN WAKEFIELD AND CHESHIRE
A man named Michael Parkinson has been sentenced to serve time in prison after his involvement in a series of alarming criminal activities related to child sexual abuse and the possession of indecent images of children. The offenses, which date back approximately 18 years, were committed in Wakefield and Cheshire, and they have recently come to light following detailed police investigations.
According to reports from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), Michael Parkinson, aged 59 and residing on Mountbatten Avenue in Wakefield, engaged in a serious sexual offence against a young girl in her parents' home located in Cheshire.
Parkinson had initially ingratiated himself with the family, presenting himself as a friend, which allowed him to gain the trust of the child.
It was during a moment in the upstairs bedroom of the house that he took advantage of the situation to commit the abuse.
This predatory behavior, although long in the past, left deep scars on the victim.
The victim, who was around 18 years old at the time she spoke of her experience, eventually confided in her boyfriend while attending university.
Her decision to disclose the abuse was rooted in a desire to prevent others from suffering similar harm.
Recognizing the importance of justice, she reported the incident to the police.
Her courage ultimately led to Parkinson's arrest at his Wakefield home on 25 March 2019.
During this operation, authorities seized his phone and electronic devices, which were subsequently examined.
The investigation uncovered disturbing evidence: Parkinson had been actively making and storing indecent images of children in the recent months leading up to his arrest.
These findings confirmed that his criminal behavior was not isolated to the past but continued into the present.
Consequently, he was formally charged and appeared at Liverpool Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty on 6 December 2021 to causing or inciting a child under the age of 13 to engage in sexual activity, as well as to possessing indecent images of children.
His guilty plea led to a sentencing hearing, during which the court handed down a jail term of 18 months for his offenses.
In addition to his imprisonment, Parkinson has been placed on the Sexual Offenders Register for a period of 10 years.
The CPS also moved to impose a sexual harm prevention order, a stringent measure aimed at protecting the community from similar risks, which the court approved.
This order will also last for a decade and includes provisions for the destruction of Parkinson’s computer and phone, further preventing him from accessing or sharing illicit material.
The victim delivered a poignant Victim Personal Statement, describing the profound impact the abuse has had on her life.
She revealed that she once was a trusted confidante among her friends and took pride in supporting others through their struggles.
However, she confided that keeping her own trauma secret was a burden she bore for years.
Her decision to report the abuse was driven by her conscience and a wish to avert similar violations from happening to other children.
In her own words, she described feeling like "a shell of her former self," overwhelmed by heightened emotions and difficulty discussing unrelated topics.
For 18 years, she minimized her suffering, telling herself it was not severe, and attempted to normalize her experience.
The emotional toll of revealing her past has been immense, causing her to experience increased distress and regret for having kept silent for so long.
While she admits she had never sought counseling previously, she now recognizes that therapy is vital for her path to recovery.
Senior Crown Prosecutor Christopher Fontaine of CPS Mersey-Cheshire expressed gratitude toward the victim for her bravery and perseverance.
"We thank her for coming forward, which enabled us to gather the evidence needed to prosecute Michael Parkinson and ensure he is held accountable," he said.
Parkinson's attempt to justify his actions by claiming to be a friend of the victim’s parents has been proven false, as it was revealed he exploited their trust to commit his offenses.
His indifference to the suffering caused reflects the seriousness of his crimes and the danger he poses.
The victim’s statement also emphasized the long-lasting effects of child abuse, including guilt, anxiety, sadness, and disgust.
She clarified how the abuse had complicated her relationships and personal life.
Her decision to report her experiences as an adult illustrates the importance of speaking out against abuse, regardless of how much time has passed.
Authorities reassured that it is never too late for victims to come forward, and doing so plays a crucial role in protecting other vulnerable children from similar harm.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the need for continuous efforts to combat child exploitation and abuse, ensuring that justice is served for victims and dangerous offenders are kept away from the community.
