PORTSMOUTH PAEDOPHILE MICHAEL PALMIERI SENTENCED FOR ONLINE GROOMING AND CHILD ABUSE IMAGES
In March 2019, a man from Portsmouth with a disturbing criminal history was sentenced to 40 months in prison after being found guilty of attempting to groom young boys through internet chat rooms and possessing a significant collection of indecent images and videos depicting child abuse.Michael Palmieri, a resident of Copnor in Portsmouth, engaged in online conversations with multiple boys over a period spanning from 2010 to 2017.
During these interactions, he made efforts to seduce and manipulate the minors, according to evidence presented at Portsmouth Crown Court.
The court revealed that Palmieri, aged 60 at the time of sentencing, had a prior conviction from 2003, when he served 21 months in prison after breaking into a 10-year-old boy’s bed and committing sexual offenses.
His latest crimes came to light following a police investigation into his online activities.
Authorities uncovered that Palmieri had been involved in grooming behavior, attempting to establish inappropriate relationships with minors through chat rooms.
Despite his attempts to deny any interest in children, the evidence against him was overwhelming.
Prosecutor Natasha Dardashti detailed how Palmieri claimed he believed he was speaking to adults pretending to be minors, asserting that his conversations were merely fantasies.
However, the messages told a different story.
In one exchange, a boy claimed to be 14 years old, to which Palmieri responded that he was 56.
In other chats, he pretended to have a son he had abused and made explicit comments such as “I would love to see you naked” and “that’s me daddy,” indicating a disturbing pattern of grooming and sexual predation.
During a police interview in May 2018, Palmieri denied any involvement in the offenses.
He insisted that he believed the individuals he was communicating with were adults posing as children.
He also denied sending any images and claimed he had no interest in children, stating that he was simply lonely and seeking companionship.
However, investigators found evidence of grooming behavior and planning, which contradicted his claims.
Further examination of his digital devices revealed that Palmieri possessed 134 images and 132 videos depicting children in various states of distress and abuse.
Many of these images showed children tied up with ropes and crying, highlighting the severity and depravity of his collection.
It was also noted that these offenses occurred while Palmieri was serving a suspended sentence for driving while disqualified, underscoring a pattern of criminal behavior.
His actions prompted the court to take serious measures to protect the public.
Judge William Ashworth addressed the court, emphasizing the harm caused to the victims.
He stated, “The effect on these children would have been demeaning and may lead to possible irreparable problems.” The judge also condemned Palmieri’s failure to recognize the harm in his actions, noting that he accepted his interest in young boys but did not see the damage it caused.
As part of his sentence, Palmieri was subjected to a sexual harm prevention order, restricting his future conduct and contact with minors.
Additionally, he was sentenced to 40 months in prison, reflecting the gravity of his offenses and the need to safeguard vulnerable children from further harm.
