SINN FéIN'S EX-PRESS OFFICER JAILED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES
Former Sinn Féin press officer Michael McMonagle has been sentenced to jail for child sex offences. He had already been registered as a sex offender after pleading guilty to 14 charges earlier. These charges include attempts to incite two children to engage in sexual activity on various dates between May 2020 and August 2021. Additionally, he faced 13 counts of attempted sexual communication with a child. The sentencing took place at Londonderry Crown Court on a Friday, where McMonagle received a nine-month custodial sentence plus nine months on licence. The court also heard that McMonagle originally faced 15 charges, including trying to involve children in sexual acts and attempting to communicate sexually with a child. His address is Limewood Street in Londonderry. The court revealed that McMonagle communicated with online accounts operated by police officers posing as children, with a total of six decoy children involved, aged from 12 to under 16. During the hearing, McMonagle expressed shame and remorse for his actions, stating he was 'ashamed of his behaviour and deeply regretted the hurt and problems he had caused for other people.' The judge acknowledged his guilty plea, which warranted a sentence reduction.Police described McMonagle as a predator who 'combed the internet' for underage victims. Detailing police operations, it was noted that over 15 months starting from May 2020, he interacted with child profiles aged between 12 and 14 and, in August 2021, attempted to engage what he believed were multiple children aged 14 or under in sexual acts. During the same period, electronic devices were seized from his home to gather evidence such as chat logs and images, after which McMonagle was charged to face trial. After sentencing, Sinn Féin's president Mary Lou McDonald stated, 'justice has been served,' and praised the law enforcement efforts that led to McMonagle's arrest. McMonagle, aged 43, previously worked as a newspaper journalist and was involved with Sinn Féin both as a press officer and an adviser at Stormont. It was also revealed that before his court appearance, two Sinn Féin press officers provided references for McMonagle during his suspension from the party. The case has drawn media attention, and authorities issued a warning that online attempts to communicate sexually with children will be aggressively prosecuted.
