MICHAEL MCGOWAN FROM EDINBURGH SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN GLASGOW
In a case that has shocked the community and highlighted the ongoing issue of child abuse, Michael McGowan, a 39-year-old man from Edinburgh, was sentenced to over ten years in prison for a series of heinous crimes involving the sexual exploitation of young girls. The sentencing took place at the High Court in Glasgow, where Judge Michael O’Grady QC delivered a stern verdict, emphasizing the severity of McGowan’s actions and the danger he continues to pose to children.
Judge O’Grady described McGowan as a danger to society, ordering that he be subjected to four years of community supervision following his release from prison.
The judge’s remarks underscored the gravity of the offences, which spanned nearly a decade and involved multiple victims.
McGowan was convicted of one count of rape and four counts of sexual abuse against young girls, with the crimes committed at various addresses across Edinburgh between 2002 and 2012.
One of the victims, a girl who was between seven and eleven years old at the time, was repeatedly raped by McGowan.
The abuse was not isolated; he also sexually assaulted four other primary school-aged girls.
The youngest victim was only four years old when McGowan began abusing her, highlighting the disturbing nature of his crimes and the profound impact on the victims’ lives.
During the sentencing, Judge O’Grady condemned McGowan’s actions, stating, “You have been convicted of an appalling catalogue of offences.
For almost a decade, you horribly exploited children.
It is clear one girl was raped by you regularly.
Another girl was four when you started abusing her.
You have blighted their childhoods, and the damage you have done will haunt their adult lives.
You will continue to pose a real risk to children for years to come.” Following the hearing, Detective Chief Inspector Alwyn Bell expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, emphasizing the importance of justice for the victims.
Bell stated, “After an extensive enquiry, Michael McGowan was brought to justice, which has allowed the victims and their families, who have shown extreme courage throughout their traumatic ordeal, to begin the process of recovery from the devastating effects of these crimes.
We welcome this sentence as it sends out a clear message that Police Scotland will not tolerate child abuse in any form and will rigorously investigate and pursue those who perpetrate such crimes.
Victims and their families can also have confidence that their cases will be handled sensitively and compassionately.”
