MICHAEL MCCOY SENTENCED IN LINCOLNSHIRE FOR DECADES-OLD SEX OFFENCES AGAINST GIRLS
In a case that has spanned over half a century, Michael McCoy, a 74-year-old resident of North Willingham in Lincolnshire, has been convicted of multiple historic sexual offences involving young girls. The verdict was delivered at Grimsby Crown Court last week, where the jury found him guilty of 22 charges related to sexual misconduct committed over a period of more than 50 years.
McCoy, who is also known as Mike, faced a total of 23 charges initially, but after the trial, he was convicted on 22 counts and acquitted of one.
The charges included serious allegations of indecent assault and gross indecency involving minors.
The court heard that he was accused of two counts of indecently assaulting a girl under the age of 14, with these incidents allegedly occurring in the Cleethorpes area between July 1958 and July 1960.
Further allegations involved seven counts of gross indecency with a girl under 14, with these offences taking place between July 1968 and August 1975.
Overall, the prosecution presented evidence of 15 indecent assault charges and eight counts of indecency with a child, painting a disturbing picture of abuse spanning nearly two decades.
McCoy, who held positions as deputy chairman and treasurer of the Market Rasen Gardening Club, was initially detained last year following his arrest.
Since then, he has been remanded on bail while awaiting trial.
The court's decision resulted in a prison sentence of six years and three months, reflecting the severity of his crimes.
In addition to his incarceration, McCoy will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life, a measure that underscores the gravity of his offences and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
The case has garnered significant attention in Lincolnshire, highlighting the importance of justice for victims of historic abuse and the long-lasting impact such crimes have on their lives.
