MICHAEL LOVESAY SENTENCED FOR ABUSE IN GRIMSBY - OVER 12 YEARS BEHIND BARS FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES
In July 2019, a man from Grimsby named Michael Lovesey was sentenced to a lengthy prison term after admitting to a series of serious sexual offenses involving two young girls. The court heard that Lovesey, aged 60 and residing on Catherine Street in Grimsby, committed a total of twelve criminal acts, including seven counts of indecent assault and five counts of indecency with a child.
These offenses had a devastating impact on his victims, leaving them with emotional scars that would likely persist for the rest of their lives.
Prosecutor Simon Reevell addressed the court, describing how Lovesey targeted the two young girls in a series of disturbing incidents.
The abuse involved inappropriate touching and coercing the victims into performing acts on him.
The court was told that both girls were left deeply distressed by the experiences, with one of them explicitly stating, “There is no recovery,” reflecting the profound and lasting damage inflicted upon her.
She expressed her anguish by contemplating how her life might have been different had she not been subjected to such abuse during her childhood.
The other girl also suffered significant emotional harm, with the court describing the impact as “corrosive,” indicating the deep and corrosive effect the abuse had on her mental well-being.
The court heard that these acts of abuse had stolen their childhoods, robbing them of innocence and normal development.
The judge, His Honour Judge John Thackray QC, emphasized the gravity of the offenses, stating, “These are extremely grave offences.
You have caused untold damage on your victims, who will never fully recover.
You have stolen the childhood of both these women.” It was also revealed that Lovesey had a prior conviction for gross indecency with a child in 1993, for which he had been given a two-year probation order by Grimsby magistrates.
This history underscored a pattern of concerning behavior.
During sentencing, Judge Thackray highlighted the severity of the crimes, noting that although he could not restore the victims’ lost childhoods, a severe sentence was necessary to reflect the gravity of the offenses.
He stated, “The effect on both your victims is profound and long-lasting.
They will never fully recover.” In mitigation, Andrew Bailey, representing Lovesey, explained that his client had pleaded guilty on the day of what was scheduled to be a trial, effectively confessing to the crimes at a late stage.
Bailey also mentioned that Lovesey had shown remorse for his actions.
He pointed out that Lovesey had previously worked delivering medicines to hospitals and suffered from a heart condition, including having a pacemaker fitted in 2011.
The court was told that as a consequence of these allegations, Lovesey lost his job.
Following his conviction, Lovesey was sentenced to 12 years and nine months in prison.
The court also imposed an extended license period of three years upon his release, during which he will be subject to strict supervision.
Additionally, Lovesey was ordered to comply with a lifelong registration as a sex offender and was given an indefinite sexual harm prevention order to restrict his future conduct and protect the public from potential harm.
