Northampton Child Sexual Abuser
A man aged 64, identified as Michael Lewis, has been sentenced to nearly eight years in prison after admitting to multiple child sex-related crimes. The incident unfolded on September 13, 2021, when officers from Northamptonshire Police’s MOSOVO (Management of Sexual or Violent Offenders) Team conducted an unannounced visit to his residence on Deal Street, Northampton.

As a registered sex offender, Lewis was subject to strict conditions under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO). These conditions mandated that he must allow police visits without prior notice and cooperate with inspections of his internet-enabled devices. During this particular visit, officers requested to examine his electronic devices, suspecting that his custom-built computer might contain encryption software designed to conceal illicit material. Although Lewis denied installing such encryption software himself, the devices were seized for further investigation.

Subsequent analysis of the seized devices revealed a disturbing collection of indecent images of children. In total, 115 images were discovered, with 47 of these classified as Category A, indicating the most severe level of indecency. Among these were 41 photographs and six videos depicting child exploitation. The findings led to multiple charges against Lewis, including three counts of making indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of a child, one count of possessing extreme pornographic images involving animals, one count of possessing a prohibited image of a child, a breach of his SHPO, and a failure to comply with notification requirements.

Lewis pleaded guilty to these offences during an earlier hearing at Northampton Crown Court. Subsequently, on January 2, 2025, he appeared before the same court to be sentenced. The judge handed down a sentence of seven years and ten months in prison, reflecting the gravity of his crimes.

PC Carl Gardner, the lead investigator from the Northamptonshire Police MOSOVO Team, expressed his satisfaction with the outcome. He stated, “I am pleased to see Michael Lewis sent to prison for nearly eight years for these very serious offences, and I hope it shows our local communities just how seriously we take these types of cases. Registered sex offenders like Lewis are very closely managed by our team, and we regularly show up at their homes, day and night, to ensure they are abiding by their conditions. Any breaches are dealt with robustly and with an approach of zero-tolerance.”

He further emphasized the severity of the evidence found, saying, “The images found on Lewis’ computer were abhorrent, and by ensuring that he returns to prison, we are keeping the public in this county safe. We will continue working hard to ensure more people like him also find themselves behind bars.”
