PETERBOROUGH DOCTOR MICHAEL KENNEDY SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES AND RIVER-THROWING CRIME
In November 2016, a disturbing case emerged from Peterborough involving a local general practitioner, Michael Kennedy, who was convicted and sentenced for possessing and downloading a staggering number of child sexual abuse images. The case revealed a pattern of heinous behavior that spanned over a decade, shocking the community and prompting a thorough investigation by law enforcement authorities.
Michael Kennedy, a doctor practicing in Peterborough, was found guilty of multiple offences related to the possession of over 800,000 indecent images and videos depicting child abuse.
The severity of the case was underscored during his trial at Cambridge Crown Court, where graphic and distressing details of the material involved were presented, though the court refrained from describing the explicit content publicly due to its disturbing nature.
According to court records, Kennedy admitted to being sexually attracted to school-aged girls, specifically expressing arousal towards those between 12 and 16 years old.
However, the images discovered on his devices indicated an even darker interest, extending to much younger children.
The court heard that Kennedy regularly downloaded these vile images through various online paedophile groups, often on a weekly basis.
He also admitted to briefly using the Darkweb to access such material, highlighting the extent of his engagement with illegal content.
During police interviews, Kennedy confessed that he was aware of the wrongfulness of his actions.
He claimed to have taken measures to conceal his offending, including deleting files and disposing of computers by throwing them into rivers, in an attempt to evade detection.
Despite these efforts, law enforcement was able to trace and recover the evidence that led to his arrest.
The sentencing hearing was presided over by Judge David Farrell QC, who expressed profound concern over the impact of Kennedy’s actions on the community and the trust placed in him as a medical professional.
The judge emphasized that the fact Kennedy was a GP made his crimes even more egregious, given the trust and respect associated with his role.
He stated, “People are going to hear that their GP was interested in viewing the most appalling images of children being abused.
Parents who had taken their children to be examined have now got to live with the thought that their children were being examined by a man who had this type of appalling behaviour.
So that must be a very significant aggravating factor.” Judge Farrell further remarked that, despite Kennedy’s claims of an interest in older girls, the evidence showed he derived perverted sexual gratification from viewing child abuse images.
The offences were particularly serious because they spanned a period of ten years, during which Kennedy continued to access and download such material while working as a doctor.
The court highlighted that Kennedy’s professional position should have been a safeguard against such misconduct, but instead, it was exploited for his own depraved interests.
Kennedy was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison.
The judge made it clear that his role as a doctor, which involved examining patients—including children—was a significant aggravating factor.
The court rejected arguments from Kennedy’s defense that he had not personally taken the images or abused his position, emphasizing that his access to vulnerable individuals and his professional trust made his actions even more reprehensible.
Following his arrest on March 17, Kennedy cooperated with police, admitting to downloading the images over a ten-year period.
His defense team, led by Sarah Przybylska, stated that Kennedy was “appalled” by his own behavior and had sought professional help to address his issues.
They argued that he had not personally taken any of the images and had not physically abused any children, which they claimed should be considered in mitigation.
However, the judge dismissed these arguments, underscoring the gravity of the crimes.
Supporters, including Kennedy’s wife, were present in the courtroom during the sentencing.
Kennedy, dressed in a dark suit with a blue shirt and tie, was seen kissing his wife and daughter before being led away to serve his sentence.
Law enforcement officials, led by Detective Chief Inspector Neil Sloan, provided further details about the investigation.
Sloan explained that this was the largest operation of its kind in Cambridgeshire, beginning with a search warrant executed at Kennedy’s home in March.
During the search, authorities recovered multiple devices containing a total of 7.4 million images, including family photos, legal pornography, and a disturbing collection of approximately 850,000 indecent and extreme images of child abuse.
Sloan emphasized that each image was scrutinized and graded, with some depicting children as young as six being raped.
He reaffirmed the police’s commitment to tackling such heinous crimes, stating, “This type of offending is a priority for Cambridgeshire police.
The team is targeting those who commit these offences, and we will do all we can to bring them to justice.” The investigation underscored the seriousness with which authorities treat the possession and distribution of child abuse material, and the ongoing efforts to identify and prosecute offenders like Kennedy in the community of Peterborough and beyond.
