MICHAEL HILTON SENTENCED IN OXFORD FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRL
In August 2023, a distressing case unfolded at Oxford Crown Court involving Michael Hilton, a 52-year-old man from Greater Leys, who was convicted of multiple counts of sexual assault against a young girl. The court heard how Hilton exploited his relationship with the girl’s mother to carry out a series of sexual abuses over several months, targeting the girl when she was still in primary school.
During the proceedings, the victim, who is under the age of 16 and therefore cannot be named publicly, delivered a heartfelt victim impact statement from behind a courtroom screen.
Her words reflected the deep trauma she endured, as she expressed her desire for Hilton to be imprisoned so that he could no longer harm her.
She stated, “I just want the whole thing to finish.
I want Michael to go to prison so he can’t hurt me.” Her voice was quiet and muffled, yet her message was clear: she longed for closure and safety.
The girl conveyed her feelings of numbness, saying, “I’m not happy.
I’m not sad.
I’m just numb,” highlighting the emotional toll of her ordeal.
Despite her young age, she expressed a desire to turn her painful experience into something positive in the future.
She revealed her aspiration to become a lawyer, aiming to assist others who might find themselves in similar circumstances, saying, “I would really like to be a lawyer to help people like me.” Judge Maria Lamb presided over the case and delivered a stern sentence, emphasizing the gravity of Hilton’s actions.
She pointed out that Hilton had taken advantage of the trust placed in him by the girl’s mother, which compounded the betrayal.
The judge noted that Hilton had also manipulated the girl by telling her not to disclose what was happening, warning her that “something bad would happen to her and that both she and her mother would get into trouble,” even threatening that she would be “really hurt.” Judge Lamb explained that these threats had a lasting impact on the girl, who, despite her young age, gradually became aware that what had happened was wrong.
It was only in 2021 that she felt able to speak out about her experiences, a testament to the psychological manipulation she endured.
The court listened to her personal statement, which was read aloud during the trial, and acknowledged the heartbreaking nature of her testimony.
Michael Hilton, of Woodpecker Green in Oxford, was found guilty of seven counts of sexually assaulting a girl under the age of 13.
His criminal history includes convictions from the 1980s and 1990s for similar offenses, indicating a troubling pattern of behavior.
The court sentenced Hilton to six years in prison, with the stipulation that he will serve half of that term before becoming eligible for release on licence.
Additionally, Hilton will be registered as a sex offender for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct after his release.
The case underscores the importance of protecting vulnerable children and holding offenders accountable for their actions.
