MICHAEL HARTLEY FROM ST HELENS SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES AGAINST VULNERABLE GIRL
In July 2023, a disturbing case unfolded involving Michael Hartley, a 36-year-old man from Winter Grove, St Helens, who was brought before Liverpool Crown Court to face serious allegations of sexual misconduct involving a young girl.Hartley pleaded guilty to six counts of inciting a girl under the age of 13 to engage in sexual activity, a conviction that highlights the gravity of his actions and the ongoing concerns about safeguarding vulnerable children.
The court was informed that Hartley's misconduct included both online and messaging platform offenses.
One of the incidents took place during a video call, while another involved the exchange of explicit images via WhatsApp.
The prosecution, led by Charlotte Kenny, revealed that the victim’s father discovered the disturbing messages when he checked his 10-year-old daughter’s phone.
He noticed that all previous messages had been deleted, but upon inspecting the images stored on the device, he found photographs depicting his daughter’s genitals.
This discovery prompted him to question his daughter about how she knew to delete such messages and images, to which she responded that Hartley had shown her how to do so.
According to the victim, Hartley had explicitly asked her to send him images of her genitals and to show him her private parts during their online interactions.
She was told that if she refused, he would cease communicating with her.
The court heard that the girl had played online games with Hartley on Facebook and WhatsApp, during which he made these inappropriate requests.
The victim was uncertain about the exact number of times these incidents occurred, but she indicated that it was “a lot.” The victim’s father provided a personal statement, emphasizing her vulnerability and noting that Hartley was aware of her fragile state.
The statement also described how the girl now frequently breaks down emotionally, often believing she has done something wrong and struggling to comprehend why she was subjected to such abuse.
The court was told that these traumatic experiences have had a lasting impact on her mental health.
Members of Hartley’s family appeared in court but made it clear to his legal representatives that they were not there to support him.
The judge, Trevor-Jones, addressed the court, stating that these were not isolated incidents but repeated offenses, indicating a pattern of grooming and exploitation.
He emphasized that Hartley must have been fully aware of his actions and the manipulative nature of his conduct.
As a result of his convictions, Hartley was sentenced to three years in prison.
Additionally, a sexual harm prevention order was imposed to restrict his contact with minors, and he was placed under indefinite notification requirements, meaning he must register as a sex offender for life.
A victim surcharge was also applied.
The sentencing was met with visible relief from some members of the victim’s family, with one woman in the family area visibly expressing her emotions by punching the air as Hartley was led away.
