MICHAEL HARRIS AND SHOCKING SEX OFFENDER CASE IN DURHAM AND STOCKTON

A known sex offender, Michael Harris, has been sentenced to prison after engaging in a relationship with a woman in York without disclosing his criminal past, sparking concern and highlighting ongoing risks associated with convicted offenders.

Harris’s ability to remain undetected for over ten months while maintaining this relationship has come under scrutiny, as authorities reveal his blatant disregard for required registries and notifications.

Michael Harris, aged 48, who previously went by the name Michael Eddy, was found to have concealed his background from his partner, a woman in York, during their months of association.

The defendant’s concealment was uncovered after police made contact with the woman, who was evidently unaware of his prior convictions and legal obligations.

This revelation left her shocked and distressed, especially after she had introduced him to her friends and family members, assuming he posed no threat.

According to the evidence presented in Teesside Crown Court, Harris utilized multiple online aliases—specifically Mikey J 1974 and Michael John—between January 1 and November 2 of the current year.

These aliases were employed to foster his relationship and facilitate his interactions, primarily within York, where he spent the majority of his time during this period.

The prosecution highlighted that Harris deliberately chose to hide his criminal past, thereby risking the safety of those around him.

Harris’s criminal history is well documented; he has been a registered sex offender since his conviction in 2011 for engaging in sexual activity with an underage girl.

His past breaches of registration requirements have led to two separate jail sentences in 2013 and 2018.

Despite these restrictions and obligations, Harris failed to comply with multiple legal requirements, including failing to register two aliases, a bank account, and a credit card with the authorities.

Prosecutor Jonathan Gittins detailed to the court that Harris's non-compliance extended into actively using aliases online to maintain his relationship.

His failure to notify authorities and the concealment of his criminal history constituted multiple breaches under the notification requirement order.

Harris pleaded guilty to all five breaches committed between the start and end of this year.

During mitigation, Harris’s legal representative, Andrew Turton, argued that the defendant intended to settle down with the woman and assured the court that no children were residing at the address.

Turton also mentioned that the one-time meeting with other family members was supervised, and Harris was not left unsupervised at any point.

Furthermore, he clarified that Harris had taken steps to change his name by deed poll, registering the new identity with the police to demonstrate his willingness to adhere to legal orders.

Despite these pleas, the court imposed a sentence of 32 months in prison.

Judge Jonathan Carroll underscored the importance of the notification requirements, emphasizing that they are vital for managing the risks posed by offenders like Harris.

The judge pointed out that Harris’s history, including the original offenses, multiple breaches, and attempts to go under the radar, proved he continued to be a significant risk.

The court also highlighted the police’s efforts to enforce compliance, noting that there had been 12 failed attempts to visit Harris for periodic checks.

To further safeguard the public, Harris was served with an indefinite restraining order to prohibit any contact with the woman involved, aiming to prevent further harm or harassment.

This case exemplifies the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces when dealing with registered offenders and underscores the importance of strict monitoring and legal compliance to protect vulnerable individuals from potential harm.
