MICHAEL FLANAGAN FROM DUBLIN CAUGHT WITH CHILD ABUSE VIDEOS AND IMAGES AT NORTH STRAND AND CLONTARF
In a case that has shocked the community of Dublin, Michael Flanagan, aged 31, is set to be sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court after being found in possession of disturbing and illegal material involving minors.The proceedings come after Flanagan was caught with a video depicting the sexual abuse of a five-year-old girl who was unconscious at the time, a discovery that has raised serious concerns about child safety and online exploitation.
Flanagan’s criminal history includes previous convictions for possessing child pornography, with incidents dating back to 2012 and 2013.
The first discovery was made during a police search of his family home in Artane on November 13, 2012.
Gardaí uncovered an external hard drive stored in an upstairs bedroom, which, upon examination, revealed a collection of child abuse images.
These images depicted young children engaged in sexual acts with adults or other children, highlighting a disturbing pattern of offending.
At that time, Flanagan was not present at his residence.
The investigation continued, and on September 6 of the following year, authorities conducted another search, this time at his home in Clontarf.
During this search, officers found a USB drive that was later analyzed by the Computer Crimes Unit.
The contents of this device included similar sexual images of children, along with a particularly alarming video file.
The video showed a man attempting to have sex with an unconscious child, who appeared to be approximately five years old.
The identities of the children involved in these images and videos have not been established.
Flanagan was arrested and admitted ownership of the files.
His legal counsel requested that the court consider a non-custodial sentence, emphasizing that Flanagan is now in a committed relationship and that his new partner is aware of the charges against him.
The defense also highlighted the significant public opprobrium associated with such offenses and noted the presence of press members in court, suggesting that publication of the case could have severe personal consequences for Flanagan.
Judge Karen O’Connor expressed particular concern over the video involving the unconscious five-year-old girl, underscoring the gravity of the offense.
She decided to adjourn the sentencing hearing until March 3 and remanded Flanagan on continuing bail, allowing further time for reflection and preparation.
The case continues to evoke strong reactions from the community and underscores the ongoing fight against online child exploitation.
