MICHAEL DENTNET AND SHOCKING SEXUAL OFFENSES IN MANCHESTER
A man from Wigan, identified as Michael Dennett, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison after a detailed investigation into his ongoing sexual misconduct against a young girl. The case, which emerged from evidence provided by the victim herself, highlights the seriousness of the abuse and the bravery shown by the young survivor.
The victim, now 16 years old, played a crucial role in the legal proceedings.
Her courageous decision to report the abuse and to give evidence in court was praised by investigators and was instrumental in securing justice.
The abuse occurred over a span of two years, from 2017 to 2018, when she was just 12 or 13 years old.
According to court reports, Michael Dennett, 54, resided on Poolstock Lane in Wigan, but his offenses had a wider impact that reached into the community of Manchester.
His inappropriate behavior began following the deterioration of his personal relationship.
He initiated contact with the young girl through persistent messaging, which contained sexually explicit content.
During the investigation, authorities discovered that Dennett sent her indecent images and repeatedly asked her to reciprocate with similar material.
The misconduct was not limited to online communication.
The girl recounted instances where Dennett attempted hugs and kisses, despite her protests that she wanted him to leave her alone.
She described feeling helpless in these situations, feeling unable to refuse his advances.
Inappropriate touching was also reported, making the abuse even more traumatic for the young victim.
The case was initially brought to police attention after the girl’s mother found sexually charged messages on her phone from Dennett.
Following this, the girl later disclosed further details, including accounts of sexual assaults.
Her disclosures prompted police to take immediate action.
Dennett was first arrested in November 2018 for the communication of indecent messages.
Subsequent police interviews took place in February and November 2019, as forensic evidence was collected and analyzed.
When initially questioned in 2018, Dennett refused to comment on the messages.
However, as investigations progressed, the police uncovered more disturbing details, which led to further arrests.
During the ongoing investigations, the victim provided additional information that prompted authorities to charge Dennett with nine criminal offenses.
These included three counts of sexual assault of a child, one count of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, four counts of sexual activity with a minor, and one count of engaging in sexual communication with a child.
While Dennett was convicted in February 2020 solely for the communication offense, he was later found guilty of the remaining charges in a re-trial held earlier this month.
On Thursday, April 28, the court sentenced Dennett to serve 14 years behind bars.
He was also ordered to register as a sex offender indefinitely and was issued a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which will remain in effect for the rest of his life.
Throughout the entire legal process, the young survivor received targeted support from specialist services.
Her bravery and cooperation were essential in bringing her abuser to justice.
Police Constable Vicki Flemming, from the Wigan Child Sexual Exploitation team, expressed her admiration for the victim’s courage.
She stated, "I want to firstly pay tribute to the survivor of this campaign of sexual abuse for their bravery in not only helping to report this incident to us, but for also having the courage to give evidence in court that was key to the success of this case." Flemming emphasized that Dennett’s offending was both predatory and repulsive.
She reaffirmed the police force’s commitment to prosecuting offenders who target children in such depraved ways and urged potential victims to come forward, assuring them that their concerns are taken very seriously.
