MICHAEL COOK AND SHOCKING ONLINE GROOMING IN DURHAM

An individual identified as Michael Cook was caught in a disturbing online grooming operation after he traveled to meet what he believed was a schoolgirl for sexual activity, only to be apprehended by police officers in Durham.

The incident began when Cook initiated contact through a social media profile that he believed belonged to a 14-year-old girl.

Unbeknownst to him, the profile was operated by an undercover officer.

From the very start of their interaction, Cook was informed of the girl’s young age.

Despite this, he engaged in casual conversation before gradually steering the dialogue toward sexual topics.

During the exchanges, Cook expressed concern about the girl living in a 'bad area' and asked whether that made her a 'bad girl' or a 'goody two shoes.' The girl responded that she probably didn't know much about sex, to which Cook replied that she was 'not a baby.' Prosecutor Kevin Wardlaw outlined the details of the conversation during a hearing at Newcastle Crown Court.

He revealed that Cook inquired about her sexual experience, asking if she liked older boys, and whether she enjoyed masturbating or being 'naughty.' Mr.

Wardlaw further explained that Cook made explicit comments about her clothing, asking if she wore cheap leggings that clung to her legs and revealed everything, as well as questions about wearing thongs.

He also asked about her previous boyfriend, who she said she had not had sex with.

According to the prosecutor, Cook expressed affection for her and indicated a desire to meet up for fun.

He claimed to be working in an office in Durham and admitted to feeling bored, suggesting they could meet at Kingston Park retail park to 'have fun.' During the conversation, Cook made a suggestive reference to her getting her hands on his gear stick, indicating he was testing her interest in sexual activity.

He also asked if she wanted to lose her virginity, switching between everyday topics and sexual content.

On November 25, 2021, police officers attended the designated meeting spot at Kingston Park retail park and arrested Cook in his car.

During the arrest, he claimed that the girl had said she was 16.

A search of his vehicle uncovered condoms stored in the driver's door pocket.

Cook, who resides in Arcadia, Ouston, County Durham, and has no prior criminal convictions, pleaded guilty to charges of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming.

He was sentenced to 18 months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid community work.

Additionally, he was mandated to register as a sex offender and was subject to a sexual harm prevention order for ten years.

During the sentencing, Recorder Richard Wright KC commented on the nature of the offense, stating, 'What underlies this offence is a deviant sexual attitude held by you which, had this been a real child, you may well have seen through to a conclusion.

You went online and befriended what you thought was a 14-year-old girl.

You sexualised the communications between you.

This was grooming behaviour and it was quite deliberate.

You turned innocent conversations into sexual conversation and you arranged to meet what you thought was a child to have sex with her.

As far as you were concerned, you were engaging in this conversation with a young and vulnerable female.' Defense lawyer Andrew Walker acknowledged the disturbing nature of the messages but explained that Cook was in the wrong environment, a mainstream chatroom intended for users over 16.

He also highlighted Cook’s personal struggles, including recent bereavements and work-related stress, which contributed to his actions.

Walker stated, 'He was under multiple life and work stresses at the time.

It happened not long after he lost both parents and he had bereavement issues.

There were stress-related work issues and he felt isolated during COVID.' Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Ian Beecroft from Northumbria Police’s Paedophile Online Investigation Team emphasized the force’s commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals.

He said, 'Our work to protect the vulnerable from predators both online and in the community is a top priority for the Force and we make no apologies for our continued activity in this area.

Our investigation caught Cook sending messages to what he believed was a 14-year-old girl, and he had no issues with that.

He was even prepared to meet up with her knowing she was underage.

We would encourage anyone who has been a victim of this type of abuse to come forward and speak to us.

We take these types of reports incredibly seriously and you will be supported.'
